In spring, the British Library will hold the UK’s largest exhibition of British comics. Comics Unmasked: Art And Anarchy In The UK (2nd May – 19th August), will look at the history of British comics arts, focusing on the political and social issues covered by comic writers and including recently rediscovered Victorian comics as well as underground comics from the 1970s and more recent series such as Watchmen and  From Hell. The exhibition will also look at British artists and writers who have worked in America on titles like Batman and Superman.

Later in the year, the British Library will focus on Gothic literature in Terror And Wonder: The Gothic Imagination (3rd October – 27th January 2015). This exhibition will examine Gothic writing since Horace Walpole’s The Castle Of Otranto, written 250 years ago, and will feature books, manuscripts and letters by writers such as Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Mervyn Peake and Angela Carter.

The British Library will also join in the national commemorations for the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War with Enduring War: Grief, Grit And Humour (19th June – 12th October), a free exhibition that will look at how people coped with life during the war through letters and manuscripts from serving soldiers as well as those at home, anxiously awaiting news of loved ones while sitting through Zeppelin raids. Finally, Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight (20th February – 26th May) will look at the history of date visualisation from Florence Nightingale to Nasa.
