(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 9-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant move towards enhancing local ecology, Logicor, a prominent owner, manager, and developer of logistics real estate across Europe, has partnered with the City Council of Azuqueca de Henares to embark on a lake restoration project at the Azuqueca de Henares Municipal Bird Sanctuary.

As part of this initiative, Logicor is sponsoring the installation of several floating islands within the Sanctuary’s lakes. These islands are designed to improve water quality, fostering an optimal habitat for the diverse avian species residing in the area. Each floating structure is equipped with aquatic plants whose roots extend into the water, providing essential nutrients and helping to purify the lakes. The islands will also reduce water temperature by blocking harmful UV rays and offer shelter for nesting birds while protecting them from potential predators.

The first two floating islands have been strategically placed in the largest of the Sanctuary’s four lakes, marking a crucial step in the project.

Mayor Miguel Oscar Aparicio of Azuqueca de Henares emphasized the importance of the ecosystem’s health for migratory birds, noting, “The collaboration with Logicor is invaluable. We take great pride in this natural area, which serves as a historical natural purifier, now transformed into an educational space for schools and universities.”

Pilar Valencia, Logicor’s Country Manager for Spain, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The Azuqueca de Henares bird sanctuary is a precious site, and our passion for enhancing this natural area reflects our commitment to sustainability and the wellbeing of local communities. This project exemplifies how Logicor is dedicated to protecting the environment while supporting the regions where our logistics assets are based.”

Covering approximately 10 hectares, the Azuqueca de Henares Bird Sanctuary, located just 20 minutes from Guadalajara, serves as a vital resting point for over 200 migrating bird species. Recognized as a Protected Fauna Refuge and Sustainable Area, the Sanctuary also features an arboretum that showcases a variety of representative gallery forest species across 6,000 square meters.

This collaborative project exemplifies Logicor’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, which are fundamental elements of its corporate strategy. In 2023, Logicor achieved a notable reduction of over 5% in emissions, bringing its total carbon emissions reduction to 20%. This accomplishment underscores the company’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future for both the environment and the communities it serves.
