Leonardo earns NATO STO Achievement Award for its contributions to the development of new promising approach to Modelling & Simulation and Training

  • Leonardo has received the NATO STO Achievement Award for its contributions to the development of a new promising approach to Modelling & Simulation and Training
  • Following the new frontiers of Modelling & Simulation Leonardo has defined Open Cloud Environment Application (OCEAN), a new prototype to deliver solutions through the Cloud
  • Leonardo’s OCEAN will allow users to move from physical to mobile remotely connected training platforms

PARIS, 25-Oct-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Leonardo, as a member of the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group(MSG-136) has been awarded the NATO Science and Technology Organization’s (STO) Scientific Achievement Award for its contributions to the development of a new promising approach to Modelling & Simulation and Training. This new approach relies on a paradigm called Modelling & Simulation as a Service (MSaaS), internationally recognized as the new frontier for modelling and simulation systems. The award has been announced at Euronaval, Paris, 23-26 October.

In this context Leonardo, in close cooperation with the NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Rome, defined OCEAN (Open Cloud Environment Application): a new prototype platform to deliver Modelling & Simulation and Training through the Cloud on highly complex military systems also using virtual and immersive reality.

The solution, developed at Leonardo’s Genoa Centre of Excellence, will allow Leonardo’s customers to move from distributed extremely rigid training systems to centralised cloud-based systems, which will provide on-demand services and be reconfigurable according to customer needs. The ‘student station’ will no longer need to be a specific physical system, installed in a particular place, but a “mobile” terminal from which the student can remotely connect to services.

The award stands as a milestone in the recognition of Leonardo’s technological innovation and further enhances the technological approach of its development strategy as defined in the company’s industrial plan.

The STO is the largest NATO organization for defence science and technology as well as the largest such research group. With a network of over 4000 scientists and engineers from across the Alliance and its partners, it promotes and conducts cooperative research and exchanges across the full spectrum of defence research. The rich history of the NATO STO goes back to 1952 with the establishment of the NATO Advisory Group for Aerospace Research. More details can be found at www.sto.nato.in.
