Leicester’s Hospitals’ Mike Morgan re-appointed by NHS England as their National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services

Honorary Professor at University of Leicester receives prestigious appointment

LEICESTER, 18-May-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Leicester’s Hospitals’ Mike Morgan, an Honorary Professor in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and consultant physician in respiratory medicine at Glenfield Hospital, has been reappointed by NHS England as their National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services.

In this role, Mike is responsible for advising the government about respiratory care, particularly commissioning, quality and standards.

Having held senior posts in professional bodies and respiratory charities, such as Vice-President of the British Lung Foundation, the editor of Chronic Respiratory Disease, Chairman of the Asthma UK research committee and President of the British Thoracic Society, Mike is well qualified for the job and applied after being approached by NHS England.

At Glenfield, Mike works within the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Allergy and Thoracic Surgery and is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester. His career interests include the assessment and management of respiratory disability, particularly in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He has had over 20 years’ experience of clinical management in developing and leading the respiratory services in Leicester, and has recently led research projects around rehabilitation for patients living with lung disease.

When talking about his role, Mike said: “I find my role with NHS England very interesting, especially advising on policy at highest level and helping to raise the profile of respiratory care nationally. An important challenge for respiratory services at the moment is making the services fit with transformation plans and the drive to deliver a sustainable and financially viable NHS.

To achieve this, Mike believes specialists need to start working with their local communities to take responsibility for their local population and aim to deliver services in community settings, outside the walls of acute hospitals. This change is being driven in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland through the Better Care Together programme.

Commenting on Mike’s reappointment, Professor Kevin Harris, honorary consultant in renal and urology services at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “The Trust and University were delighted that Professor Mike Morgan has been reappointed as the National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services in England. This follows a period of re-organisation of the National Clinical Director structure. Mike’s reappointment to this important role is important recognition of the significant contribution that he continues to make to the field of respiratory medicine and reflects positively on the department of respiratory medicine in Leicester and all that it has achieved.”
