LEGO Kladno Factory Doubles Solar Energy Capacity, Slashes Carbon Emissions by 9%

The new solar panels have been installed on recently constructed buildings and previously unused rooftop areas of the factory in Kladno.

(IN BRIEF) The LEGO factory in Kladno, Czech Republic, has completed an expansion of its rooftop solar park, more than doubling its renewable energy capacity from 1 MWp to 2.5 MWp. This expansion is expected to reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by over 9% of its annual electricity consumption, equivalent to 1,800 tonnes of CO2. The solar panels now cover 11,000 m² of previously unused roof space. This project is part of LEGO’s broader sustainability initiatives, which include increasing renewable energy production at its global factories and building new facilities with integrated solar capacity in Vietnam and Virginia, USA.

(PRESS RELEASE) KLADNO, 21-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant step towards sustainability, the LEGO factory in Kladno, Czech Republic, has successfully completed the latest expansion of its rooftop solar park, more than doubling its renewable energy capacity. This development aligns with LEGO’s broader commitment to increasing renewable energy production across its facilities. The newly installed solar panels boost the factory’s energy generation from 1 MWp to 2.5 MWp, enough to power approximately 400 homes. This increase is expected to reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by over 9% of its total annual electricity consumption in the coming years.

Michaela T. Horáková, general manager of the LEGO Kladno factory, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Expanding our renewable energy capacity at the factory is crucial in our ongoing efforts to minimize the environmental impact of our production and reduce our carbon emissions.” The solar panels now cover 11,000 m² of previously unused rooftop areas, and the reduction in emissions equates to around 1,800 tonnes of CO2.

LEGO’s investments in renewable energy are not limited to Kladno. Globally, the company is ramping up its efforts to reduce emissions at its factories, stores, and offices. Two new production facilities are currently under construction in Vietnam and Virginia, USA, with plans for on-site and off-site solar energy solutions to meet their energy needs by 2025 and 2027. Additionally, LEGO has expanded its solar capacity at existing factories in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, and China, bringing the total to 15.6 MWp in 2023—a 16% increase compared to 2022. The company is also planning to build a solar park in Billund, Denmark, the birthplace of LEGO, to supply its offices and facilities there with clean energy.
