LEGO Group Unveils Eco-Innovative Manufacturing Hub in Vietnam to Empower Community and Enhance Global Play

(IN BRIEF) The LEGO Group officially opened its new LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam facility in Binh Duong province, marking its sixth global site and second plant in Asia. The ceremony, which included notable figures such as Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Mai Văn Chính and former President Nguyen Minh Triet, celebrated not only increased manufacturing capacity for LEGO play experiences but also an unwavering commitment to sustainability. The facility, designed to be fully powered by renewable energy by 2026, utilizes 12,400 rooftop solar panels and benefits from a new energy centre with an advanced battery storage solution in partnership with VSIP. Acclaimed for its LEED Platinum and Gold certifications, the complex incorporates environmentally friendly practices including the exclusive production of paper-based pre-pack bags, an initiative to eliminate single-use plastics. Additionally, LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam stands as a beacon for workforce innovation and local community enrichment, offering a Future Factory Workplace that supports comprehensive training programs and inclusive amenities. Complementing the production site, a regional distribution centre in Dong Nai province is set to bolster supply chain efficiency later this year. Overall, the project represents a US $1 billion investment underscored by rigorous precision manufacturing standards and an ambitious vision for environmental and community impact.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILLUND, 9-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In a momentous occasion, the LEGO Group marked the inauguration of its groundbreaking LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam facility in Binh Duong province, southern Vietnam. This latest venture, representing the company’s sixth global production site and only the second in Asia, underscores LEGO’s ambition to nurture long-term regional expansion while enriching play experiences for children everywhere. The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests including His Excellency, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Văn Chính, ex-President Nguyen Minh Triet, LEGO Group CEO Niels B Christiansen, Chief Operations Officer Carsten Rasmussen, alongside national, provincial, industry, and local community partners.

The new facility distinguishes itself not only by its cutting-edge design and sizeable production capabilities but also by its commitment to environmental stewardship, embodying the most eco-friendly factory in LEGO’s portfolio. Powered entirely by renewable energy by early 2026, the plant boasts an array of 12,400 solar panels on its rooftops. Additionally, a landmark partnership with Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) has secured the establishment of an adjacent energy centre, featuring Vietnam’s first large-scale battery storage system, scheduled to be operational before the end of 2025. This initiative will work in tandem with power purchase agreements to fulfill the remaining energy requirements.

According to Niels B Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group, the launch of LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam marks an extraordinary milestone. He emphasized that the state-of-the-art facility not only amplifies production capacity in the Asia-Pacific region but also resonates with LEGO’s vision for sustainable innovation and global community impact. Carsten Rasmussen, the group’s COO, added that the newly introduced battery storage solution and integrated renewable power agreements are revolutionary steps both for LEGO and for Vietnam’s industrial sector, setting a benchmark for other companies aiming to enhance their renewable energy consumption.

In terms of sustainability, the facility features the LEGO Group’s debut LEED Platinum-certified administrative and children’s play pavilion buildings, while the moulding, packing, and storage structures have received LEED Gold certification. Notably, this is also LEGO’s first venture to exclusively manufacture paper-based pre-pack bags, highlighting a significant reduction in single-use plastic.

The facility further represents LEGO’s investment in human capital. Initiated in the summer of 2024, a comprehensive training program—spanning practical exposure at other LEGO factories combined with local hands-on experience—has been launched with support from over 100 global trainers. LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam also pioneers the group’s Future Factory Workplace concept by offering an empowering work environment equipped with green spaces, play areas, wellness rooms, and other supportive amenities aimed at fostering inclusivity and employee satisfaction.

Beyond its internal objectives, the LEGO Group has reinforced its commitment to community engagement by collaborating with local government bodies, non-governmental organizations, and charities to expand learning through play initiatives. Partners such as the National Centre for Special Education, LIFE Centre, and Save the Children International in Vietnam are implementing programs that collectively are set to benefit more than 60,000 children by the close of 2025. Projects like LEGO Braille Bricks, Build the Change, and Girls Unstoppable underscore LEGO’s dedication to nurturing creativity and thoughtful development among young learners.

In addition to the manufacturing site, the LEGO Group will soon open a regional distribution centre in Dong Nai province to further streamline operations. As its second facility in Asia, this centre—operated by Kuehne+Nagel—is now preparing to dispatch its inaugural shipments and enhance the supply chain network.

Key facts about LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam include a US $1 billion investment, ongoing recruitment for a range of roles, a sprawling 44-hectare campus (equivalent to 62 soccer pitches), and a meticulously engineered production process delivering bricks with a precision equivalent to 1/10th of a hair’s width.

At its core, this endeavor integrates renewable energy measures—combining on-site rooftop solar, a pioneering energy centre with battery storage, and future power purchase agreements—with ambitious sustainability targets such as zero waste to landfill and significant LEED certifications. The transition to paper-based packaging reinforces LEGO’s commitment to environmental responsibility, while the factory’s overall design and innovative features set a new standard for precision manufacturing and workforce development within the Asia-Pacific market.
