LEGO Group Expands Solar Energy Capacity, Accelerates Sustainability Efforts

(IN BRIEF) The LEGO Group has made significant progress in its sustainability efforts by increasing its solar energy capacity by 61% globally over the past two years. The company has installed solar panels across six factory sites and plans to expand its solar capacity by 72% by the end of 2025. This expansion is a key component of the LEGO Group’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2032 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Notable solar projects include expansions at the Kladno factory in the Czech Republic, a major solar park near the headquarters in Billund, and the installation of solar panels at the new Vietnam factory. The company is also exploring new technologies like battery storage to further support its renewable energy goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILLUND, 1-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The LEGO Group continues to make significant strides in its sustainability journey, revealing plans to boost its solar energy capacity by 72% globally by the end of 2025. The company has already increased its solar capacity by 61% over the past two years, with installations now covering six of its factory sites worldwide.

This growth in renewable energy capacity is a vital component of the LEGO Group’s broader environmental strategy, aimed at reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 37% by 2032 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the company is actively working to understand and reduce its environmental footprint across its operations and supply chain.

In the last two years, the LEGO Group has added 22 MWp of solar capacity, marking significant milestones in the company’s renewable energy development. Notable achievements include a doubled solar capacity at its factory in Kladno, Czech Republic, and a 400% increase at its Billund headquarters, where an off-site solar park has been developed. While solar energy currently represents around 4% of the total energy consumption across LEGO operations, the company is accelerating its efforts to expand this percentage in the coming years.

The LEGO Group is on track to expand solar capacity further with plans to add 37.97 MWp by the end of 2025. This increase will include a tripling of solar energy capacity at the Nyíregyháza factory in Hungary, where installation work is already underway. Additionally, at the new Vietnam factory, 12,400 rooftop solar panels have already been installed, contributing 7.34 MWp to the site’s energy needs. As part of this expansion, LEGO is also exploring technologies like battery storage to enhance renewable energy usage.

A major solar park development is also underway near LEGO’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark. The 80 MWp solar park, slated for completion in 2028, is expected to meet the peak energy demand of LEGO’s Billund-based operations, making it an integral part of the company’s sustainability infrastructure.

“We are committed to reducing emissions and minimizing our environmental impact, but we cannot do this alone,” said a LEGO Group representative. “Collaborating with suppliers and partners is key to driving the transition to renewable energy and ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

The LEGO Group’s ongoing efforts to expand its solar energy capacity and reduce emissions highlight its dedication to a more sustainable future for both the company and the next generation. By prioritizing renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint, LEGO is playing an active role in addressing one of the biggest concerns of today’s children: the future of the planet.
