Latvenergo Selects BLIX, AFRY’s Subsidiary, to Drive Large-Scale Onshore Wind Projects in Baltic States

(IN BRIEF) Latvenergo AS, the largest energy utility in the Baltic States, has awarded BLIX, part of AFRY, as the Owner’s Engineer for multiple large-scale onshore wind projects in the Baltics over a five-year period. The projects align with Latvenergo’s vision to become a leading sustainable energy solutions provider, aiming to develop onshore wind projects with a total capacity of up to 1200 MW by 2030. BLIX will provide consultancy services throughout the development phases, including project assessment, layout development, procurement supervision, construction management, and more.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 12-Aug-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — As a result of an international tender process, Latvenergo AS, the Latvian state electricity company and the largest energy utility in the Baltic States, have awarded BLIX, part of AFRY, as the Owner’s Engineer for the development of several large-scale onshore wind projects over a five-year period.

In line with their vision to be the leading provider of sustainable solutions in the energy industry, Latvenergo is developing several onshore wind energy projects across the Baltics to reach a total capacity up to 1200 MW by 2030.

Once all the projects in the pipeline are completed, the new wind farms will feed enough clean energy into the electrical grid to power approximately 1.3-1.95 million households in the Baltics.

BLIX, part of AFRY, has been selected to provide consultancy services throughout all project development phases, from the initial project assessment to the development of the O&M and decommissioning strategy of each wind farm.

The assignment includes the development of the wind farms layouts, energy yield assessments, procurement supervision, contracting and construction management. Moreover, it covers the over-all technical management and support, including operational monitoring, technical maintenance management and the decommissioning strategy. The work will be conducted both on-site in Latvia and remotely from the offices in Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands, in close connection with Latvenergo’s in-house wind energy development team and the local consultancy partner Engineering Centre Profecto.

The estimated order value for AFRY is 55 MSEK and the activities will be executed from July 2023 until July 2028.

“As Latvenergo aims to increase its renewable energy generation portfolio, a significant part of the strategy is to develop onshore and offshore wind power plants. The joint venture with Latvijas Veja parki Sia plans to reach a total capacity of at least 800 up to 1200 megawatts by 2030. To help us implement our planned wind parks more efficiently, the global experience and expertise of selected international wind energy consultants BLIX, part of AFRY, will help Latvenergo accelerate the implementation of modern wind turbine projects in Latvia”, Kaspars Cikmačs, Member of the Management Board of Latvenergo AS.

“We are proud that Latvenergo has selected us to support in realising wind energy projects in the Baltics. We will use our expertise and skills in engineering, procurement, contracting and construction, to make the projects a success by bringing them to financial close and build them within time and budget. We are delighted to start the collaboration with our local subcontractor Profecto for Latvenergo”, says Albert van der Hem, Managing Director, BLIX Consultancy.

“Our team of devoted wind experts are driven by a common ambition to foster decarbonisation with clean energy solutions. We are pleased to support Latvenergo providing our technical consultancy services in this strategic project that contributes to Latvia’s goal of achieving energy independence and climate neutrality. We look forward to tapping into our broad experience for the realisation of this large-scale wind project that is pivotal for the energy transition of the country”, says Peter Plug, Global Head of Renewable Energy, AFRY.
