(IN BRIEF) LANXESS is launching a sustainable version of its Bayferrox iron oxide yellow pigment, branded under the Scopeblue label. These new pigments, made with eco-efficient raw materials and renewable energy, offer a 35% reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional Bayferrox pigments. The Scopeblue line includes micronized pigments ideal for high-quality formulations, such as pigment pastes and facade paints, and retains the same chemical composition and functional properties as conventional pigments. The move aligns with LANXESS’s broader sustainability strategy, emphasizing environmental responsibility and integrating sustainability into business practices.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, 12-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — LANXESS, a leading specialty chemicals company, is set to introduce a more sustainable version of its popular Bayferrox iron oxide yellow pigment. These new pigments, branded under the company’s Scopeblue label, have been designed with a significantly lower carbon footprint, made possible through the use of eco-efficient raw materials. This move is a response to the increasing demand within the paint and coatings industry for sustainably produced pigments and reflects the industry’s growing focus on the product carbon footprint (PCF).

The introduction of the Scopeblue product line is part of LANXESS’s broader sustainability strategy. The Scopeblue label signifies products made with a high proportion of sustainable raw materials, coupled with a considerably reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional products. This aligns with LANXESS’s commitment to environmental responsibility and addresses the increasing consumer and industry demand for greener alternatives.

Daniela Schmitt, Head of Global Marketing at LANXESS’s Inorganic Pigments business unit, commented, “With the launch of this new, low-emission yellow pigment under the Bayferrox brand, we aim to help our customers make their value chains more sustainable. As the first manufacturer to introduce environmental product declarations for iron oxide pigments, we are proud to continue our leadership in sustainability with the launch of this new product line.”

The Scopeblue product line includes the micronized iron oxide yellow pigments Bayferrox 3910, 3910 LV, and 3920, which are perfect for use in high-quality formulations like pigment pastes and facade paints. These pigments not only meet the high demands of the industry but also offer substantial sustainability benefits.

What sets Scopeblue apart is its production process, which uses more eco-efficient raw materials sourced from renewable energy sources. The carbon footprint of these pigments is around 35% lower than that of conventional Bayferrox products, according to life cycle analysis certified by TÜV Rheinland. Additionally, the raw materials used in the Scopeblue line are certified under the ISCC Plus (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) rules, using the mass balance method.

Despite the environmentally friendly production, Scopeblue pigments maintain the same chemical composition, color, and functional properties as their traditionally manufactured counterparts. This ensures that they can seamlessly integrate into existing paint systems.

LANXESS continues to prove that sustainability and business success can go hand in hand, believing that integrating sustainability into their products and processes not only contributes to environmental preservation but also enhances the economic and social aspects of their business model.
