Landsvirkjun and ENERCON Partner to Build Iceland’s First Large Wind Farm

Landsvirkjun and ENERCON Partner to Build Iceland’s First Large Wind Farm

(IN BRIEF) Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s state-owned energy provider, has partnered with ENERCON to construct the country’s first large-scale wind farm. The project will feature 28 E-138 EP3 turbines, generating 120 MW of capacity across 17 square kilometers in Búrfell, south of Reykjavik. Set to complement Iceland’s geothermal and hydropower resources, the wind farm highlights the country’s commitment to diversifying its renewable energy mix. Construction begins this year, with turbine installation planned for mid-2026. This milestone solidifies ENERCON’s role in Iceland’s energy history and reflects the growing potential of wind energy in the Nordic region.

(PRESS RELEASE) AURICH, 30-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Iceland’s state-owned energy provider, Landsvirkjun, has selected ENERCON to deliver and construct the country’s first large-scale wind farm. The project will feature 28 E-138 EP3 wind turbines, each with a hub height of 81 meters, and a total installed capacity of 120 MW. Spanning 17 square kilometers in Búrfell, approximately 130 kilometers from Reykjavik, this landmark development will enhance Iceland’s renewable energy portfolio, complementing its established geothermal and hydropower resources.

The collaboration between Landsvirkjun and ENERCON is not new, having started in 2012 with the installation of Iceland’s first wind turbines. “We are thrilled to expand on our successful partnership with ENERCON for this historic project,” said Hörður Arnarson, CEO of Landsvirkjun. “Wind energy is a valuable addition to Iceland’s green energy mix, and ENERCON’s expertise ensures we have a reliable partner for this milestone.”

The wind farm’s development underscores Iceland’s commitment to diversifying its renewable energy sources. “This project highlights the growing importance of Iceland as a market for wind energy,” said Benjamin Seifert, Regional Head of ENERCON Central & Northern Europe. “Our long-standing relationship with Landsvirkjun has brought us to this exciting stage, where we can contribute to Iceland’s energy evolution.”

ENERCON’s Chief Commercial Officer, Uli Schulze Südhoff, emphasized the project’s significance: “Being the chosen partner for Iceland’s first large-scale wind farm is an honor. This achievement not only integrates ENERCON into Iceland’s energy history but also reinforces the reliability of our technology and team.”

Construction is set to begin later this year with the establishment of site roads and foundation work by Landsvirkjun. Component deliveries will start in May 2026, with turbine installation slated for the second quarter of that year.

Expanding Iceland’s Green Energy Future

By incorporating onshore wind power into its energy strategy, Iceland continues to solidify its position as a leader in renewable energy. This collaboration between Landsvirkjun and ENERCON marks a pivotal step in achieving sustainable energy goals while showcasing the potential of wind power in the Nordic region.
