Komerční banka the first in the Czech market to install vending machines featuring contact and contactless card payment options

PRAGUE, 14-3-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — In co-operation with MasterCard, Komerční banka is the first in the Czech market to install vending machines featuring contact and contactless card payment options. The technology will make it easier to pay at car parks and on food and drink vending machines and other self-service terminals.

It will save terminal operators considerable costs of machine maintenance and cash transfer. Vending machines are another segment in which contactless payment technologies will undergo significant development in the future.

“Our clients increasingly use contactless payment cards. We are therefore looking for additional areas in which these cards can be used and enable quick and safe payments for our clients. Vending machines are interesting for us because, for example, they continuously broaden their range of products and are accessible at various places 24 hours a day,” said Monika Truchliková, Manager of Means of Payment at KB.

All over the world, consumers prefer ease, speed and security of paying. Given that average spending on car park meters amounts to tens of crowns, contactless card payment is the ideal solution for Czech consumers.

“Komerční banka works with partners who operate car park meters and terminals at fuel filling stations. We are planning to extend contactless technologies to include coffee and food vending machines, ski passes and hospitals very soon,” adds Monika Truchliková.

“The Czech Republic is one of the European leaders in the use of MasterCard PayPass contactless cards. We therefore seek to extend contactless acceptance to include vending machines and other unattended devices, where paying by contactless cards is clearly faster and more convenient than searching for small change,” says Martina Kirchrathová, Commerce Development Director at MasterCard for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Vending, i.e. quick refreshments from vending machines, is becoming increasingly popular in company and other forms of catering. Vending machines are installed at railway stations, airports and fuel filling stations. In addition to food and drinks they increasingly offer sundry items such as sanitary products, magazines, mobile phone top-up etc.
