Kapsch TrafficCom’s Mississauga Manufacturing Facility Reaches 115 Million Toll Transponders Produced as North American Operations Continue to Expand

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has reached the milestone of 115 million toll transponders produced at its Mississauga, Ontario manufacturing facility, where a new device now leaves the production line approximately every three seconds. The site, which employs more than 100 people and traces its manufacturing history to 1978, was relocated to a new Crestlawn Drive facility in 2024 to bring production and support teams together while maintaining capacity to manufacture millions of tolling and traffic technology devices each year. Its transponders are used in major North American tolling programmes including E-ZPass and Ontario’s Highway 407 and are designed to support accurate electronic toll collection, dependable revenue capture and reduced congestion by allowing drivers to pay without stopping at toll plazas. The operation also supports switchable transponders for managed lanes and has expanded sustainability initiatives through refurbishment programmes that have extended the life of hundreds of thousands of devices since 2017 and kept more than 26 tonnes of electronic waste out of landfill, while reusable packaging and local component sourcing further reduce waste and transport impacts.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 4-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom has reached a major North American manufacturing milestone, with 115 million toll transponders now produced at the company’s facility in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

The facility manufactures transponders used by transportation agencies and road users across major tolling systems in North America, with a new device leaving the production line approximately every three seconds.

Designed for long-term reliability, the transponders support electronic toll collection by enabling motorists to pay without stopping at conventional toll plazas. Kapsch TrafficCom said this contributes to more efficient traffic flows, shorter travel times and reduced vehicle emissions.

The devices are supplied with a 10-year warranty and are designed to provide transportation agencies with consistent transaction performance and dependable revenue collection while offering drivers a straightforward, durable tolling solution.

Mississauga operation supports major North American tolling programmes

Transponders manufactured at the Mississauga facility are used in major tolling programmes across North America, including E-ZPass and Highway 407 in Ontario.

The devices can be transferred between vehicles and are designed to operate reliably over extended periods in everyday driving conditions.

The site also supports Kapsch TrafficCom’s broader tolling portfolio, including switchable transponders used for managed lanes.

Managed-lane systems are becoming an increasingly important tool for transportation agencies seeking additional mechanisms to fund road improvements and network expansion while managing traffic demand.

JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America, said the 115 million-unit milestone reflects the quality of the company’s manufacturing operations and the confidence customers place in its tolling technology.

He said reliable transponders help agencies maintain accurate toll transactions and revenue collection while giving drivers technology that continues to function consistently over many years.

Operations consolidated at new Mississauga site in 2024

Kapsch TrafficCom relocated its Mississauga operations to a new facility on Crestlawn Drive in 2024.

The move brought production and support functions together at a single location while preserving the capacity to manufacture millions of transponders and other traffic technology products annually.

More than 100 employees currently work at the facility.

The Mississauga operation has a manufacturing history dating back to 1978, when it originally produced electronic display systems.

Following Kapsch TrafficCom’s acquisition of the business in 2010, the facility evolved into a manufacturing centre focused on advanced traffic management and electronic tolling technologies.

Refurbishment programmes extend transponder lifecycles

In addition to manufacturing new devices, the Mississauga site operates refurbishment and lifecycle-extension programmes intended to reduce waste and lower costs for customers.

Since 2017, Kapsch TrafficCom has refurbished hundreds of thousands of transponders, helping prevent more than 26 tonnes of electronic waste from being sent to landfill.

Refurbished units are subject to the same testing procedures and quality standards applied to newly manufactured devices and are also covered by the same 10-year warranty.

The company said the refurbishment programme has generated significant savings for customers while extending the useful life of existing tolling equipment.

Local sourcing and reusable packaging support sustainability efforts

The Mississauga facility also works with local suppliers for components including plastic transponder cases.

To reduce packaging waste and transport-related emissions, Kapsch TrafficCom uses recycled plastic tubs to move millions of cases between suppliers and the manufacturing plant.

The reusable containers replace disposable cardboard boxes and other single-use packaging materials.

Together with refurbishment programmes, these practices form part of the facility’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact associated with high-volume transponder manufacturing and logistics.

With 115 million units now manufactured and a production rate of approximately one transponder every three seconds, the Mississauga facility remains an important part of Kapsch TrafficCom’s North American manufacturing and tolling technology operations.
