Kapsch TrafficCom and Autobahn GmbH Complete First Phase of Largest Connected Infrastructure Project in Europe

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom and Autobahn GmbH des Bundes have completed Phase 1 of Europe’s largest C-ITS project, aimed at improving safety on Germany’s motorways. 1,000 ITS Roadside Stations have been installed to send real-time warnings to vehicles about upcoming construction zones. The system is already operational on 8,600 kilometers of highways and will be expanded to include additional safety features.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 20-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom, in partnership with Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, has successfully completed the first phase of a groundbreaking project to enhance safety on Germany’s motorways through the implementation of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS).

Over the past few months, a total of 1,000 ITS Roadside Stations (IRS), provided by Kapsch TrafficCom and other suppliers, have been mounted on mobile barrier panels and activated. These stations are designed to transmit critical warning messages directly to approaching vehicles, alerting drivers to nearby construction zones and significantly reducing the risk of accidents in high-risk areas.

Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, expressed pride in reaching this major milestone: “This is the largest C-ITS project in Europe, and I’m incredibly proud of our team’s efforts. Working alongside 120 highway maintenance departments, we’ve been able to deploy our technology on over 13,000 kilometers of highways, helping prevent accidents and enhancing safety for all road users.”

Kapsch TrafficCom’s roadworks warning system is currently operational on 8,600 kilometers of Germany’s 13,000 kilometers of highways, with the company also providing the software that controls the devices. This ensures that the technology meets Germany’s stringent safety and critical infrastructure requirements.

By transmitting real-time roadwork information to Autobahn GmbH’s backend systems, the data can also be made available at the National Access Point (Mobilithek), further extending the reach and effectiveness of the system.

The completion of Phase 1 marks a major step in the development of this system. Moving forward, additional cooperative services will be incorporated to further improve safety on German highways.

C-ITS: The Future of Road Safety

C-ITS, the technology enabling vehicles, infrastructure, and road operators to communicate with each other, facilitates the exchange of real-time information between vehicles and roadside infrastructure. This allows safety-related information—such as roadwork alerts, emergency vehicle warnings, traffic updates, and weather-related information—to be disseminated more quickly and efficiently than traditional methods.

No internet connection is required for the vehicle; instead, the infrastructure hardware functions as both a transmitter and a receiver, exchanging information with vehicles within range. The communication takes place via a special WLAN system that complies with Europe-wide specifications defined by ETSI and C-Roads.
