International Pint of Science festival, 23-25 May 2016

NORWICH, UK, 24-May-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Today (23 May) sees the start of the international, three day Pint of Science festival where thousands of scientists will simultaneously stand up and talking about their research in 100 cities across 12 countries around the world.

Founded only four years ago by two UK researchers, the festival today brings a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments to the world’s favourite watering holes.

Tickets are now on sale for the world’s largest festival of public science talks taking place 23-25 May 2016. Norwich joins Pint of Science as more than 20 local researchers take the stage in pubs across the fine city.

Teams of researchers from UEA, Norwich Research Park and CEFAS have organised a diverse range of talks for the three day festival all of which are located in pubs loved by locals; The Mash Tun, St Andrew’s Brewhouse, Bar Marzano and the Garden House.

Norwich based charity and research funder The Big C will also be part of the festival and Darrell Green will be speaking at the event. Bar Marzano at the Forum will be hosting talks specifically about cancer with topics including: fighting cancer, diagnosing prostate cancer early and an internal cancer defence system.

All tickets are £4 and are available from the Pint of Science website (pintofscience.co.uk). A ticket will provide access to a variety of exciting talks including:

Ants to Ashes – this event covers the ash dieback epidemic as well as the involvement of antibiotics with plants and insects (Prof Matt Hutchings)
Secrets of the Sea – attendees can drink a beer and discover Leviathans & Kraken on Norfolk’s Great Barrier Reef with Fiona Tibbitt as well as gaining a comprehensive understanding on the biology of European sea bass with Dr Ewan Hunter
Myth Busters Nutrition – attendees will learn about the pros and cons of natural vs. processed foods with Dr Alan Mackie and an interesting talk on probiotics (Lukas Harnisch)
The Future of Cancer Treatment – attendees will find out how researchers can use their expertise and knowledge to develop even more successful treatments, as well as finding out if treating cancer by targeting non-cancer cells works and looking at colon cancer and the contributing factors (Dr Helen James.)

Pint of Science Norwich co-ordinator, Peter Moore Fuller, is eagerly waiting for the festival to begin: “The Pint of Science festival has been a huge success all over the world, so to be able to bring the festival to Norwich is a great achievement. We have world-leading scientists taking part in the festival, delivering in-depth and fascinating talks for all attending. This is a perfect taster of what’s to come later in the year with the inaugural Norwich Science Festival in October.”

Pint of Science was established four years ago by a group of UK based postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Festival founders Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin, who were based at Imperial College London are now aiming to get their volunteer run initiative in every city in the world!

“We want to give people the opportunity to learn about the latest scientific developments directly from the scientists themselves – and then feel free to question them”, said Festival co-founder Dr Paul. “We were at first surprised by the public’s appetite for these events and by the interest from both volunteer organisers and speakers. The rapid growth of Pint of Science from a grassroots effort to a global movement has shown that we may have been underestimating both scientists and the public, and that there is a greater need for more events like these”.
