Innovative Partnership: Ahlstrom and Terre de Couleur Unveil Biodegradable Hair Cap

(IN BRIEF) Ahlstrom and Terre de Couleur have partnered to introduce a biodegradable and reusable hair cap made from fiber-based materials as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic caps. The cap, utilizing Ahlstrom’s Genuine Vegetable Parchment (GVP) paper, is composed of 100% cellulose fibers and offers a silky and flexible texture when wet. It provides hair protection, maintains optimal humidity and heat for cosmetic applications, and can be hand washed and reused. The cap is certified as home compostable and industrially compostable, contributing to a more sustainable approach in professional salons and home hair coloring kits. This collaboration showcases the companies’ commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting responsible consumption.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 2-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Ahlstrom, a global leader in fiber-based materials founded in 1851, and cosmetic brand, Terre de Couleur, have joined forces to launch a groundbreaking, biodegradable and reusable hair cap made from fiber-based materials. This innovative solution aims to reduce or eliminate the plastic content typically found in single-use hair caps without compromising performance, comfort, or user experience for both professionals and consumers.

“This objective was in direct line with Ahlstrom’s journey of ‘from Plastic to Purpose’ where we examine the full customer experience and product performance to not only invent a more sustainable end-use product but to add value in the product’s full life cycle,” said Dr. Clothilde Manzano, Head of New Business Development for Ahlstrom. “Ahlstrom and Terre de Couleur’s direct partnership allowed for a ‘boundless’ view of our Genuine Vegetable Parchment (GVP) paper technology, resulting in more sustainability and sense for the end use.”

“In salons and homes around the world, thousands of plastic caps are thrown away each day because they cannot be reused or recycled,” said Nazish Munchenbach with Terre de Couleur. “In line with our brand values, our objective was to find an accessible and efficient option that had a more positive end-of-life after its final use.”

Leveraging the unique properties of Ahlstrom’s Genuine Vegetable Parchment (GVP) paper, which is composed of 100% cellulose fibers and free from chemical additives, the hair cap offers a silky and flexible texture when wet. It provides numerous benefits for cosmetic applications, including use during showers, hair mask treatments, and professional or home hair coloring. Key advantages of the cap include:

  • Hair protection
  • Maintaining optimal humidity and heat for color or hair care treatments
  • Hand washability and reusability
  • Chain-of-Custody Forestry Certification according to FSC® and PEFC™ standards
  • Home compostability certified by OK COMPOST HOME from TÜV and industrial compostability certified by OK COMPOST from TÜV (EN13432)

In addition to professional hair salons, this innovative product replaces traditional plastic caps in home hair coloring kits, contributing to a more sustainable approach to personal care.

Through their collaborative value-chain innovation, Ahlstrom and Terre de Couleur demonstrate their commitment to developing eco-friendly alternatives that address the environmental impact of single-use plastics. By utilizing Ahlstrom’s expertise in specialty materials and Terre de Couleur’s dedication to sustainability, they have successfully created a biodegradable hair cap that aligns with their shared goals of reducing plastic waste and promoting responsible consumption.

“The reuse component of these caps is also a key contributor in its positive sustainability attributes,” Munchenbach further explained. “The caps can withstand more than 20 uses, yet they may fully compost in a 14-day period.”

“The team at Terre de Couleur has proven the effectiveness of this cap, and we are ready to work across the beauty supply chain to apply these learnings to achieve plastic replacement in other cosmetic applications,” Manzano of Ahlstrom commented.
