Inmarsat Maritime Secures Bureau Veritas Cyber Security Type Approval for NexusWave, Strengthening Secure Multi-Network Connectivity for Digital Vessels

(IN BRIEF) Inmarsat Maritime has received Bureau Veritas Cyber Security Type Approval for NexusWave, its fully managed bonded multi-network maritime connectivity service, providing further independent validation that the platform meets the applicable requirements of IACS UR E27. The approval follows a separate ClassNK certification against the same standard earlier in 2026 and supports the deployment of NexusWave across fleets operating under different classification frameworks. Bureau Veritas assessed the service as an integrated system, reviewing its onboard ICT architecture, network equipment, orchestration processes and managed-service edge infrastructure rather than examining individual components in isolation. NexusWave combines GEO, LEO, LTE and L-band connectivity within a single managed service and incorporates cyber security controls including network segmentation, encryption and centrally managed security capabilities. Inmarsat Maritime said the certification reinforces its strategy of helping ship operators adopt digital technologies while maintaining resilience, safety, compliance and reliable communications as cyber security requirements become increasingly important across the maritime industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 8-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, has received Cyber Security Type Approval from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for NexusWave, its fully managed bonded multi-network connectivity service for maritime operators.

The approval confirms that NexusWave has been assessed against the International Association of Classification Societies’ Unified Requirement E27 (IACS UR E27), providing additional independent validation of the cyber security architecture and controls embedded within the service.

The milestone follows ClassNK Cyber Security Type Approval for NexusWave against the same IACS requirement earlier in 2026 and supports Inmarsat Maritime’s strategy of delivering secure, resilient and future-ready connectivity for increasingly digital shipboard environments.

Bureau Veritas approval supports deployment across global fleets

The Bureau Veritas Type Approval was driven by customer requirements and is intended to help ship operators deploy NexusWave consistently across fleets while accommodating vessel-specific classification requirements.

By securing approval from multiple classification societies, Inmarsat Maritime aims to reduce complexity for operators managing mixed fleets and different class frameworks.

The company said the latest certification demonstrates its ability to support shipowners and operators as cyber security, digitalisation and compliance expectations continue to evolve across the maritime sector.

Assessment covers integrated onboard connectivity architecture

Inmarsat Maritime worked with Bureau Veritas to demonstrate that the NexusWave architecture and associated security controls satisfy the applicable requirements of IACS UR E27.

The assessment covered the system scope previously reviewed under the same requirement, including the onboard ICT architecture, network equipment, orchestration processes and relevant managed-service edge infrastructure.

Rather than assessing individual components independently, Bureau Veritas considered how the various technologies and controls operate together as an integrated connectivity environment.

This systems-level approach is intended to provide a more complete assessment of cyber resilience across the onboard communications architecture.

Cyber security becomes increasingly important as vessels digitalise

Gert-Jan Panken, General Manager and Vice President at Inmarsat Maritime, said maritime operations are becoming increasingly connected, creating greater demand for cyber resilience across both operational and business systems onboard vessels.

He said the Bureau Veritas approval demonstrates Inmarsat Maritime’s commitment to supporting customers as they adopt more advanced digital services while maintaining the security, reliability and compliance expected of mission-critical communications.

Panken added that working with multiple classification societies gives operators greater flexibility to deploy a consistent connectivity platform across diverse fleets while meeting different class requirements.

According to Inmarsat Maritime, secure connectivity is becoming a strategic foundation for operational efficiency, safety, regulatory compliance and crew welfare.

Bureau Veritas highlights value of integrated cyber assessment

Christophe Chauviere, Marine & Offshore Technical & Operations Excellence Senior Vice-President at Bureau Veritas, said cyber resilience is becoming increasingly important as shipboard systems become more connected and digitally integrated.

He noted that IACS UR E27 provides a consistent framework for determining whether onboard systems and equipment have been designed with appropriate cyber security protections.

Bureau Veritas assessed the relevant NexusWave ICT architecture and associated elements as an integrated system rather than reviewing each component in isolation.

The Type Approval provides independent assurance that cyber resilience has been considered in the design and implementation of the service in accordance with the applicable UR E27 requirements.

NexusWave combines GEO, LEO, LTE and L-band connectivity

NexusWave is designed to combine multiple communications networks into a single managed maritime connectivity service.

The platform intelligently bonds GEO satellite, LEO satellite, LTE and L-band connectivity to provide greater resilience and continuity across different operating environments.

Security features are embedded into the NexusWave architecture and include network segmentation, encryption and centrally managed security capabilities.

These controls are designed to support corporate applications, operational systems and crew connectivity while maintaining separation and resilience across different onboard traffic requirements.

Multi-network architecture designed for always-on maritime communications

By combining different connectivity technologies, NexusWave is intended to reduce dependence on any single communications layer and provide more consistent performance across global shipping routes.

The service integrates network orchestration with managed security capabilities, allowing Inmarsat Maritime to operate the connectivity environment as a unified service rather than as a collection of separate communications products.

This approach is designed to simplify network management for vessel operators while supporting the increasing use of cloud services, remote monitoring, digital applications and connected operational systems at sea.

Growing cyber credentials support maritime digitalisation strategy

The Bureau Veritas approval adds to NexusWave’s expanding portfolio of independent cyber security certifications.

Inmarsat Maritime said the additional accreditation strengthens its position as a connectivity provider supporting ship operators as maritime operations become more dependent on digital systems and continuous network access.

As shipboard connectivity ecosystems continue to evolve, the company plans to maintain its focus on helping customers adopt always-on, multi-network communications while addressing emerging cyber security, classification and operational requirements.
