Indra Joins EuroMIDS Consortium to Develop Advanced Communications Terminal for European Fighter Aircraft

(IN BRIEF) Indra Group is participating in the EuroMIDS SAS consortium to develop F-EMIDS, an advanced communications terminal for European combat aircraft under the EMIDS-2 programme. The consortium, which also includes Hensoldt Sensors, Leonardo and THALES SIX GTS France, has signed a contract with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation. The new terminal will support continuous real-time data exchange and improve interoperability among European armed forces operating in coalition environments. F-EMIDS will replace current Link 16-based systems on aircraft including the Eurofighter, Rafale, Tornado IDS/ECR, A400M and E-3F AWACS. Indra will work on both the software validation model and the first physical prototype, including red/black processing for classified information. The programme also supports Europe’s technological sovereignty and the development of future combat cloud capabilities.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 20-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Indra Group is participating as part of the EuroMIDS SAS consortium in the development of an advanced communications terminal designed to strengthen interoperability among European combat aircraft.

The consortium, which includes Hensoldt Sensors, Indra Group, Leonardo and THALES SIX GTS France, has signed a contract with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation to advance the EMIDS-2 programme.

The programme will develop the F-EMIDS communications terminal, a system intended to provide European fighter aircraft with the advanced data exchange capabilities required for future coalition and multi-domain operations.

The new terminal will enable combat aircraft to exchange data continuously and in real time, supporting the ability of European armed forces to operate effectively together in coalition environments.

F-EMIDS is expected to replace current systems based on Link 16 data links installed on aircraft including the Eurofighter, Rafale and Tornado IDS/ECR, as well as the A400M military transport aircraft and the E-3F AWACS early warning aircraft.

Indra said the development of the new system is a decisive step in ensuring European technological sovereignty over a critical defence capability. The company noted that only a small number of military powers worldwide have control over such technologies.

Through its role in the programme, Indra will strengthen its knowledge and capabilities in next-generation military communications terminals, which are essential in modern operations.

The company also expects the programme to reinforce its position in the development of the combat cloud, a key element for the future multi-domain capabilities of armed forces.

Within the EMIDS-2 programme, Indra will contribute to the development of the F-EMIDS A.0 terminal model, which will be used to validate the system’s software and new communications capabilities.

Indra will also work on the F-EMIDS B.0 terminal, the first physical prototype of the system. This version will include segregated red/black processing, enabling the handling of classified information.

The EMIDS systems will include a new dual cryptographic architecture designed to strengthen communications protection.

They will also include two waveforms that allow aircraft to participate simultaneously in multiple networks through Concurrent Multi-Netting, while also receiving more data in saturated environments through Concurrent Contention Receive.

The system will additionally feature the new broadband ESSOR waveform, designed to be more secure, suited to current operational theatres and based on shared standards that support interoperability.

The terminals will be based on a software-defined radio architecture, giving them the flexibility to adapt to different frequencies, modulations and standards through software updates.

This approach is expected to reduce the need for expensive hardware replacements when communications requirements change.

The EMIDS-2 programme builds on the first phase of the initiative, which defined the ESSOR MIDS family of terminals.

That family includes F-EMIDS for combat aircraft, H-EMIDS for helicopters, M-EMIDS for naval platforms and S-EMIDS for land surface terminals.

Indra said its participation in the EuroMIDS consortium will help Europe retain control of a critical defence asset while strengthening the future interoperability and operational effectiveness of European armed forces.
