Indra Group’s COMSec Gains Quantum-Resistant Certification From Spain’s National Cryptographic Centre

(IN BRIEF) Indra Group’s COMSec secure mobile communications solution has been certified by Spain’s National Cryptographic Centre for its quantum-resistant capabilities. The latest version, COMSec 5.1, has been included in the ICT Security Products Catalogue as a qualified solution for High-level systems under Spain’s National Security Scheme and approved for Limited Distribution. COMSec 5.1 incorporates post-quantum cryptography technologies to protect against future quantum threats, including “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, where encrypted data captured today could be decrypted in the future. The solution provides secure voice, messaging, video calls and data transfer using end-to-end encryption over commercial operator networks. Indra said the certification reinforces its role as a national developer of advanced secure communications systems and its position in post-quantum cryptography. The company is also involved in Spain’s national quantum communications network, EuroQCI integration and the IberianQCI project linking Spain and Portugal.

The latest version of COMSec, version 5.1, has been included in the ICT Security Products Catalogue of the National Cryptology Centre as a qualified solution suitable for use in High-level systems under Spain’s National Security Scheme and approved for Limited Distribution.

According to Indra, COMSec is the only solution of its kind in Spain endorsed by the National Cryptographic Centre for secure mobile communications with quantum-resistant capabilities. The certification confirms the platform’s ability to protect sensitive communications against both current cyber threats and future risks linked to quantum computing.

The new version incorporates post-quantum cryptography technologies, known as PQC, to help address emerging quantum-era risks. These include the threat known as “harvest now, decrypt later”, where encrypted information intercepted today could potentially be decrypted in the future once more powerful quantum computers become available.

The update follows the National Cryptology Centre’s recommendations for a secure post-quantum transition, including guidance set out in CCN-TEC-009, the CCN-STIC 221 guide on authorised cryptographic algorithms, and official transition timelines for hybrid systems that combine classical and post-quantum cryptography.

Indra said it has been a pioneer in adopting post-quantum cryptography technologies in Spain and internationally, including through the MEMeC cryptological certification process.

COMSec enables secure voice and data transmission using networks from commercial operators. It can be deployed on a broad range of commercial mobile devices running the most widely used operating systems.

The system transmits communications through IP packets using proprietary encrypted protocols designed to prevent tracing. It consists of an application installed on the user’s device and a virtual operator system that manages communications.

COMSec continues to follow a security-by-design approach and provides end-to-end encryption for voice, instant messaging, video calls and data transfers. It can be integrated into on-premises architectures and highly controlled environments.

Indra said the new post-quantum capabilities have been added without affecting the user experience, while preserving the product’s robustness and low latency.
