Indra Group Bolsters Europe’s Technological Sovereignty with Quantum Technologies and Secure Communications Solutions

(IN BRIEF) Indra Group is leading efforts in Europe to enhance secure communications with the deployment of quantum-secure technologies. Through the DISCRETION project, NATO’s REPMUS exercise, and its involvement in EuroQCI, Indra is playing a pivotal role in advancing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems to secure communications for both defence and critical infrastructure. The company is also contributing to the European Commission’s cybersecurity efforts and leading the way in the space sector through Indra Space. These initiatives emphasize Indra’s commitment to ensuring Europe’s technological sovereignty and readiness for future challenges.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 6-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Indra Group is continuing to solidify its position as a pioneer in secure communications and quantum technology, responding to Europe’s growing need for sovereign and resilient solutions to protect critical infrastructure. The company is accelerating the rollout of quantum-secure systems for both military and civilian applications, ensuring that communication networks remain protected against the rapidly evolving cyber threats.

By incorporating the capabilities of its Space subsidiary in Portugal, Indra Group is driving the development and integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies, a solution that enables tamper-proof communication by ensuring secure key exchanges over quantum channels. This work aligns with several high-impact European initiatives, including the DISCRETION project and Indra’s participation in the NATO-led REPMUS exercise series.

The €6 million DISCRETION project, funded by the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), has successfully demonstrated the use of a quantum-secure network for military purposes. This cutting-edge system integrates Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with QKD technologies, securing tactical and strategic communications across both national and international borders. The demonstration in Brussels emphasized critical elements such as encrypted messaging, resilience against cyberattacks, and operational flexibility—core features needed to fortify Europe’s defence infrastructures. DISCRETION showcases the collaborative efforts of key European players, including institutions from Portugal, Spain, Austria, and Italy, highlighting Europe’s shared commitment to advancing quantum-secure networking.

Indra’s capabilities were also put to the test during the international REPMUS exercise, where the company reinforced its strategic partnership with NATO and other allied defense bodies. The exercise demonstrated key aspects of quantum-secure messaging, effective key management, and network resilience across multiple nodes—foundational principles for the development of secure communications architectures. Additionally, Indra’s leadership role in NATO’s working group for military use cases of QKD further underlines its growing influence in defence-related quantum technology discussions.

Alongside these initiatives, Indra Group is also enhancing Europe’s cybersecurity infrastructure by providing the European Commission’s cyber risk management center with COMSec, a secure communication system designed to withstand the future threats posed by quantum computing. In addition, the company is participating in the PQReact project, which is focused on developing a framework to transition critical infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography, further cementing its role in securing Europe’s digital future.

Indra is a key player in the European Quantum Communications Infrastructure (EuroQCI), coordinating Portugal’s Quantum Communications Infrastructure (PTQCI) and contributing to the deployment of similar infrastructure in Spain (EuroQCI Spain). As part of these efforts, Indra is integrating its proprietary key management system (KMS) to support next-generation quantum communications.

Indra Group is also advancing its presence in the space sector through the creation of Indra Space. The company now covers the entire value chain of space projects, from mission design and satellite manufacturing to ground segment design and satellite operations, offering comprehensive expertise in QKD technology for both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO).

With Indra Space and its continued investment in quantum-secure communications, the company is positioning itself to deliver scalable, sovereign communications solutions for the post-quantum era, ensuring that Europe maintains its technological independence and readiness in the face of emerging threats.
