The study, based on a survey of over 55,000 people across 57 countries, highlights stress, screen time, and poor sleep environments as major barriers to quality rest. IKEA has developed the IKEA Sleep Formula with Dr. Tom Crawford from the University of Oxford to offer personalized tips for improving sleep based on five key factors. The report also addresses sleep inequalities, especially for the LGBTQ+ community, financially insecure individuals, and people with disabilities. IKEA aims to create solutions that promote better sleep for all.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, 10-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — A new report from IKEA, Sleep Uncovered, reveals startling insights into global sleep habits, including the fact that people are missing out on an average of 1 hour and 20 minutes of sleep each night. The study, one of the largest of its kind, surveyed over 55,000 individuals across 57 countries and highlights that, while many people long for more rest, achieving quality sleep remains elusive for most.

Mainland China leads the world in sleep quality, while the USA and Norway report the lowest scores. The report underscores a universal desire for better sleep, with many participants citing stress, screen time, and disrupted routines as significant barriers. Surprisingly, 70% of people view sleep as one of life’s greatest joys, yet financial concerns, poor sleep environments, and poor bedtime habits make restful sleep a challenge for many.

IKEA, which has committed to creating solutions for better sleep, collaborated with mathematician Dr. Tom Crawford of the University of Oxford to develop the IKEA Sleep Formula. This formula, based on data from the study, combines five key factors—comfort, stress, wellbeing, vices, and schedule—to provide personalized tips for improving sleep quality. Simple changes such as reducing light and noise or setting the right room temperature can significantly improve sleep quality.

The report also sheds light on sleep inequalities, particularly among the LGBTQ+ community, financially insecure individuals, and people with disabilities. Additionally, material factors, such as the quality of bedding, sleepwear, and room cleanliness, play a vital role in sleep quality. IKEA’s insights into the challenges people face in small and shared living spaces aim to inspire practical solutions to improve rest for all.

Practical tips for better sleep include creating a sleep sanctuary, maintaining a regular bedtime routine, and avoiding screens before bed. IKEA’s commitment to improving sleep globally is part of their broader mission to make everyday life better for everyone.
