Hexagon Launches Next-Generation OPTIV S Optical CMM With AI-Assisted Measurement Capabilities

(IN BRIEF) Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has launched the next-generation OPTIV S optical coordinate measuring machine, combining improved accuracy, faster machine dynamics and AI-assisted measurement capabilities. The redesigned platform offers approximately 30% higher machine dynamics, around 15% shorter inspection cycle times in initial testing, improved tactile accuracy and a larger field-of-view vision sensor. Through PC-DMIS, Hexagon is also introducing AI Edge Detection, Fast Auto-Focus and AI Illumination to reduce programming effort and improve consistency. The OPTIV S will be commercially available from 14 September 2026 at IMTS and AMB, with additional configurations and AI-powered capabilities rolling out through 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEERBRUGG, 3-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has launched the next generation of its OPTIV S optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM), combining higher accuracy, faster inspection performance and new AI-assisted measurement capabilities.

The redesigned platform is aimed at manufacturers inspecting complex, high-value components across industries including electronics, medical devices, automotive and precision engineering.

OPTIV S combines advanced vision measurement with tactile and multisensor capabilities, helping quality teams increase throughput while simplifying inspection workflows.

Hexagon said the platform also introduces a new generation of intelligent software features that will be rolled out in phases throughout 2026 and 2027.

Manuel Mueller, Director, Product Marketing (HW & SW), Division Stationary Metrology at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, said manufacturers are under growing pressure to inspect more parts in less time without sacrificing accuracy.

He said OPTIV S was developed to address those demands through faster measurement, improved precision and software designed to reduce programming effort and simplify advanced optical metrology.

Higher accuracy and faster inspection

The new OPTIV S platform has been redesigned to improve both measurement performance and inspection productivity.

Key improvements include tactile accuracy of E0, MPEE = (1.6 + L/200) μm and approximately 30% higher machine dynamics through increased travel speeds and acceleration.

Hexagon said initial application testing has shown inspection cycle times reduced by around 15%.

The system also includes a larger field-of-view vision sensor, enabling users to measure more features using fewer images.

Together, these improvements are designed to help manufacturers inspect parts more efficiently while maintaining the precision required in demanding production environments.

AI-assisted functions added through PC-DMIS

OPTIV S also introduces new intelligent software capabilities through PC-DMIS.

The planned features are designed to reduce manual programming, improve repeatability and make advanced optical inspection less dependent on specialist operator expertise.

One of the main capabilities is AI Edge Detection, which uses AI-assisted camera and lighting calibration to improve edge detection and deliver more consistent measurement results across different machines and part conditions.

Hexagon said the feature is intended to reduce programming time and improve inspection consistency.

AI Edge Detection is planned for commercial release with PC-DMIS 2026.2.

Another feature, Fast Auto-Focus, is designed to deliver autofocus performance up to 50% faster, further reducing inspection time. Commercial release is planned for 2027.

Also scheduled for 2027 is AI Illumination, which automatically optimises lighting parameters to improve edge detection while reducing manual setup and trial-and-error programming.

OPTIV S designed for modern multisensor inspection

Hexagon is positioning OPTIV S as a compact, high-accuracy multisensor CMM that combines productivity with precision.

The platform is intended for manufacturers seeking to modernise quality inspection through intelligent automation while retaining flexibility across a wide range of applications.

By combining improved mechanical performance with AI-assisted measurement, Hexagon said OPTIV S can help reduce inspection bottlenecks, improve repeatability and increase confidence in quality data without adding complexity to existing workflows.

The platform complements MAESTRO, Hexagon’s next-generation all-digital CMM platform.

Together, the systems expand Hexagon’s portfolio of modern metrology solutions and give manufacturers greater flexibility to select inspection technologies suited to different applications.

Existing OPTIV M users to benefit from new capabilities

Many of the new software capabilities being introduced with OPTIV S will also be extended to Hexagon’s existing OPTIV M platform.

This includes PC-DMIS enhancements and AI-assisted measurement functions such as AI Edge Detection, Fast Auto-Focus and AI Illumination.

Hexagon said this will allow existing OPTIV M customers to gain similar improvements in programming efficiency and inspection consistency through system upgrades.

Part of broader strategy for autonomous quality control

The launch forms part of Hexagon’s wider strategy to integrate artificial intelligence and automation across its measurement technology portfolio.

The company aims to reduce dependence on specialist operator expertise and make high-precision inspection accessible to a broader range of manufacturers.

Hexagon said the strategy also reflects its focus on connecting physical and digital production environments and turning inspection data into actionable intelligence.

The technologies are intended to support faster and more confident decision-making across industries ranging from aerospace and automotive to electronics and medical devices.

OPTIV S, beginning with size 4.4.3, will become commercially available from 14 September 2026 at IMTS and AMB.

Additional AI-powered capabilities, expanded sizes and further configurations are scheduled to be introduced through 2027.
