Hexagon Acquires ITRES to Strengthen Advanced Airborne Mapping and Multi-Sensor Geospatial Data Capabilities

(IN BRIEF) Hexagon AB has acquired ITRES Research Limited, a Calgary-based specialist in airborne hyperspectral and thermal imaging systems, to strengthen its advanced airborne mapping and multi-sensor geospatial data capabilities. The acquisition combines ITRES’ hyperspectral and thermal sensors with Hexagon’s existing airborne sensing and processing portfolio, which includes LiDAR point clouds, high-resolution optical imagery, digital twins, workflow software, flight planning tools and data delivery systems. The combined offering will enable customers to collect richer datasets from a single airborne survey and support more advanced data fusion for ground surface assessment, object classification, material identification and thermal property detection. The technologies are expected to support environmental applications such as urban heat mapping, water quality monitoring, wetlands, forestry, minerals and geology mapping, as well as disaster response uses including fire hotspot detection and georeferenced thermal imagery. ITRES will become part of Hexagon’s Infrastructure & Geospatial Business Area and is expected to generate around €13 million in revenue in 2026.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 12-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Hexagon AB has acquired ITRES Research Limited, a Calgary-based provider of airborne hyperspectral and thermal imaging systems, strengthening its capabilities in advanced airborne mapping and multi-sensor geospatial data analysis.

The acquisition brings ITRES into Hexagon’s Infrastructure & Geospatial Business Area and expands Hexagon’s ability to provide richer airborne datasets for customers working in geospatial mapping, environmental monitoring, disaster response and advanced analytics.

ITRES adds high-performance hyperspectral and thermal imaging sensors that operate across a wide range of wavelengths. These technologies enable precise material identification and temperature analysis, extending beyond what visible and near-infrared imaging can provide on its own.

The acquisition complements Hexagon’s existing airborne sensing and processing portfolio, which includes LiDAR point clouds, high-resolution optical imagery, digital twins, integrated workflow software, flight planning tools and data delivery systems. By combining these capabilities, Hexagon aims to offer a more complete airborne mapping platform from a single provider.

The combined portfolio will allow customers to collect more analytically powerful datasets from one airborne survey. By fusing hyperspectral and thermal data with LiDAR and optical imagery, users can improve ground surface assessment, object classification, material differentiation and thermal property detection.

Hexagon said the integration will also help customers process, manage and act on complex geospatial data more efficiently through its established software ecosystem. This creates new opportunities for hybrid data collection and data fusion that previously required solutions from multiple vendors.

Anders Svensson, President and CEO of Hexagon, said geospatial professionals increasingly want to extract deeper insights from each airborne survey. He said adding hyperspectral and thermal sensing to Hexagon’s portfolio expands the range of information that can be captured and analysed, helping customers improve classification accuracy, distinguish materials more effectively and obtain more reliable thermal insights.

The acquisition is expected to support a wide range of environmental applications, including urban heat mapping, water quality monitoring, wetlands analysis, minerals and geology mapping, and forestry mapping. It will also strengthen disaster response capabilities, including the detection of active fire hotspots, the identification of people or objects through heat signatures, and the rapid delivery of georeferenced thermal imagery to emergency responders.

ITRES will be reported within Hexagon’s Infrastructure & Geospatial Business Area, formerly known as Geosystems, and within the Scanning & Mapping Division. The company is expected to generate revenues of around €13 million in 2026, be accretive to net profit from completion, and initially operate with margins slightly below the Infrastructure & Geospatial Business Area average.
