HENSOLDT to Provide Advanced Radar Systems to Boost Australia’s Air Surveillance and Space Operations

(IN BRIEF) HENSOLDT has secured a contract with Space Centre Australia (SCA) to deliver two high-performance Air Surveillance Radar – Next Generation (ASR-NG) systems and provide a 20-year sustainment plan. The radar systems will enhance airspace management in Australia, supporting both high- and low-altitude operations. The €20 million contract aims to strengthen Australia’s air surveillance capabilities, particularly in the remote Northern region, aligning with SCA’s mission to drive innovation in space and aerospace safety. Delivery of the systems is expected by 2026, with sustainment services beginning in 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) TAUFKIRCHEN, 18-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — HENSOLDT, a leader in sensor solutions, has secured a contract with Space Centre Australia (SCA) to deliver two state-of-the-art Air Surveillance Radar – Next Generation (ASR-NG) systems, along with a comprehensive 20-year sustainment plan. This agreement, valued at approximately 20 million euros (around $30 million AUD), will enhance Australia’s airspace surveillance capabilities as part of SCA’s broader mission to lead in aerospace safety and innovation. The contract outlines that the radar systems will be delivered by the end of 2026, with support services commencing in 2027.

The ASR-NG radar system features advanced signal processing technology for long-range airspace monitoring and minimizes interference from wind turbines. Its 3D radar capabilities ensure precise air traffic management within a 120 NM range and up to 50,000 feet in altitude. Complementing the primary radar, the MSSR 2000 I secondary radar integrated into the ASR-NG identifies aircraft using transponder signals, adhering to the “Mode S” standard for improved interrogation of aircraft identification. These advanced radar units will facilitate both high-altitude and low-altitude airspace management, in line with SCA’s vision of driving innovation in space safety and aerospace operations.

The official signing ceremony took place in Taufkirchen, with notable attendees including James Palmer, CEO of Space Centre Australia, and Scott Morrison, Chairman of Space Centre Australia and former Prime Minister of Australia. This agreement positions Australia as the largest operator of ASR-NG systems globally, with 11 units planned in total.

Mark Novak, General Manager of HENSOLDT Australia, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “This contract is a significant achievement and the result of close cooperation between HENSOLDT and Space Centre Australia. We look forward to a long-term partnership that will bolster Australia’s air surveillance capabilities.”

Scott Morrison, Non-Executive Chairman of Space Centre Australia, highlighted the strategic importance of the project: “The development of SCA’s Spaceport in Cape York will not only make Australia a leader in the global space industry but also significantly enhance the nation’s surveillance and aviation management capabilities in Northern Australia, supporting both defence and border protection agencies.”

James Palmer, CEO of Space Centre Australia, added: “This acquisition of HENSOLDT radar systems represents a key milestone for our aerospace operations. These advanced systems will enhance the safety of our launches and strengthen our commitment to maintaining world-class safety standards in the aerospace industry. We are excited to incorporate HENSOLDT’s proven technology as we continue to expand our capabilities.”

HENSOLDT Australia has a strong reputation for radar installation and maintenance across Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bases and naval platforms. This contract further solidifies HENSOLDT’s role in air traffic control (ATC) radar systems in the Asia-Pacific region and strengthens its collaboration with Space Centre Australia to meet growing aerospace and defense needs across Australia, the UK, and the USA.
