Henrik and Louise Obel Reach Agreement With Nordisk Film Cinemas for Sale of Two BIG BIO Locations

(IN BRIEF) BIG BIO and Nordisk Film Cinemas have agreed on the sale of BIG BIO Herlev and BIG BIO Nordhavn, two Danish cinemas known for Dolby Atmos sound and luxury recliner seating in all screens. The cinemas were developed by Henrik and Louise Obel, who founded BIG BIO Herlev in 2015 and later expanded the concept to Nordhavn and Holstebro. Under the agreement, Nordisk Film Cinemas will acquire the Herlev and Nordhavn locations, while Henrik and Louise Obel will continue to own and operate BIG BIO Holstebro. The two cinemas being sold have five screens each and a combined total of 1,154 seats. Nordisk Film Cinemas will take over the locations on 1 October 2026. The deal strengthens Nordisk Film Cinemas’ Danish portfolio and allows it to build on BIG BIO’s focus on premium cinema experiences, guest service, sustainability, high-quality sound and luxury seating.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 10-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — BIG BIO and Nordisk Film Cinemas have reached an agreement for the sale of BIG BIO Herlev and BIG BIO Nordhavn, two modern Danish cinemas known for Dolby Atmos sound and luxury seating across all screens.

BIG BIO Herlev was founded in 2015 by Henrik and Louise Obel. The concept was later expanded with BIG BIO Nordhavn and BIG BIO Holstebro. Under the new agreement, Henrik and Louise Obel will sell the Herlev and Nordhavn cinemas to Nordisk Film Cinemas, while retaining ownership and operation of BIG BIO Holstebro.

Henrik Obel said the discussions with Nordisk Film Cinemas had been constructive and that the buyer intends to build on the cinema experience BIG BIO has developed.

“When we founded BIG BIO in 2015, our mission was to give our guests the best possible cinema experience,” said Obel. “That led to three cinemas with luxury seating in every seat and the highest-quality sound in all screens — combined with a focus on sustainability. We are proud to have set a new cinema standard together with a fantastic team and with tremendous support from our guests.”

BIG BIO Herlev is located in Big Shopping, while BIG BIO Nordhavn is situated at Hamborg Plads. Together, the two cinemas have five screens each and a combined total of 1,154 seats, all fitted with luxury recliner chairs. Both cinemas feature Dolby Atmos sound.

Asger Flygare Bech-Thomsen, Chairman of the Board of Nordisk Film Biografer A/S, said Nordisk Film Cinemas has followed BIG BIO’s development and is impressed by the quality of the guest experience created by Henrik and Louise Obel.

“We have followed BIG BIO’s development over the years and are greatly impressed by the quality of cinema experience and guest service that Henrik and Louise Obel have created,” said Bech-Thomsen. “That is also why we are pleased that they are entrusting us to carry two out of three of their cinemas forward. The cinemas in Herlev and Nordhavn are a very strong fit for Nordisk Film Cinemas.”

Nordisk Film currently operates 24 cinemas in Denmark, along with 21 cinemas in Norway and two cinemas in Sweden.

Nordisk Film Cinemas is expected to take over BIG BIO Herlev and BIG BIO Nordhavn on 1 October 2026.
