Hempel Joins RightShip’s Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program to Drive Sustainable Maritime Practices

(IN BRIEF) Hempel has joined RightShip’s Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program, marking a significant step in promoting sustainable maritime practices. The collaboration focuses on Hempel’s Hempaguard, a silicone hull coating that significantly reduces fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and in-water environmental impact. Approved by RightShip after a thorough review, Hempaguard has been recognized for its contribution to sustainability, with a reduction in biocide content and proven performance in fuel savings. The partnership builds on previous work between Hempel and RightShip to improve the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) ratings for vessels using low-friction coatings.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 21-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Hempel has partnered with RightShip, the leading ESG-focused digital platform in the maritime industry, as part of their Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. This collaboration underscores Hempel’s commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and decarbonization within the maritime sector, aligning with both organizations’ goals of reducing environmental harm and promoting sustainable shipping solutions.

As part of the partnership, Hempel’s groundbreaking silicone hull coating, Hempaguard, has been approved after undergoing RightShip’s rigorous product review process. Hempaguard is known for its impressive ability to deliver substantial fuel savings, lower CO2 emissions, and reduce in-water environmental impact. With up to 90-95% less biocide content than traditional high-performing Self-Polishing Antifoulings (SPCs), Hempaguard supports a cleaner and more sustainable approach to ship maintenance.

Alexander Enström, Executive Vice President and Head of Marine at Hempel, commented:
“We are excited to be a part of RightShip’s Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. For over a decade, Hempaguard has helped vessels save on operational costs while significantly reducing carbon emissions. Being part of this initiative is an important step in raising awareness within the maritime industry about the importance of adopting sustainable technologies, and we are proud to be recognized by RightShip for our commitment to environmental innovation.”

Ajinkya Kadam, Head of Partnerships at RightShip, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:
“We are thrilled to welcome Hempel to the Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. Hempaguard is a groundbreaking solution that will contribute significantly to advancing sustainability in the maritime industry. The increasing interest in this program highlights the collective desire within the industry to create safer and more sustainable practices for maritime operations.”

Since its introduction in 2013, Hempaguard has set the standard for silicone hull coatings, with over 4,000 successful applications. The product has been DNV-verified for its positive impact on fuel efficiency and speed loss, maintaining vessel performance even during idle periods, changing trading patterns, or slow steaming. In addition, the reduction in biocide content plays a crucial role in minimizing the environmental footprint of the maritime industry.

Prior to this partnership, Hempel and RightShip worked together to update the Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI), allowing shipowners to assess the benefits of low-friction coatings like Hempaguard. This update has further enabled vessels to improve their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Rating within RightShip’s platform, promoting more environmentally responsible shipping operations.
