BAE Systems: Helping to Write the Next Chapter in Aviation History

Cutting edge innovations – ARGUS and MAST – featured on PBS’ NOVA

29-1-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Two of our cutting edge innovations – ARGUS and MAST  – were recently featured on PBS’ NOVA.  On January 23, the science and technology documentary series aired “Rise of the Drones,” which examined both the history and potential future of unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs.

ARGUS-IS, or the Autonomous Real-Time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance Imaging System, was demonstrated by Dr. John Antoniades, technical group director for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Exploitation Technologies. Antoniades discussed how we developed the 1.8-Gigapixel camera to enable unprecedented capability in finding, tracking and monitoring events in real time.

The show also looked at the development of micro-robotics equipped with sensors and processors that allow them to fly autonomously. We lead an alliance of scientists from industry, academia and government creating hand-held-sized micro-robots for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, in a program called MAST, or Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology. Once developed, this technology will enable ground soldiers to remotely perform surveillance in complex urban environments.
