HAROPA PORT Awards €183 Million Contract for Sustainable River Link to Port 2000 in Le Havre

(IN BRIEF) HAROPA PORT has awarded a €183 million contract to a consortium led by VINCI Construction and DEME to create a 1.8 km river channel linking Port 2000 in Le Havre directly to the Seine river basin. The project, set for completion in 2027, aims to enhance river traffic, reduce carbon emissions in logistics, and improve safety. The venture will involve clearing unexploded ordnances and contributions from various VINCI subsidiaries. The La Chatière project reinforces VINCI Construction’s expertise in port development, with previous projects including upgrades to La Cotinière and Brest ports and ongoing work at Porto-Vecchio and Port-la-Nouvelle. The project is supported by the Normandy region, French government, EU, and HAROPA PORT, and contributes to the decarbonization of transport along the Seine river corridor.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 4-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — HAROPA PORT, France’s leading port, has awarded a €183 million contract for the construction of a new river link to Port 2000 in Le Havre to a consortium led by VINCI Construction and DEME. The contract, which involves the creation of a 1.8 km channel, will connect Port 2000 directly to the Seine river basin, boosting river traffic and supporting the port’s role as a central hub in France’s logistics network. The project is set to be completed by 2027 and aims to enhance sustainability by reducing carbon emissions in logistics chains while improving safety and increasing container traffic via the river.

The 1,800-metre river channel will be protected by an embankment, making it a critical part of the infrastructure designed to promote multimodal transport. The project’s design includes a preliminary phase focused on clearing unexploded ordnances, a complex and specialized task requiring a range of expertise. VINCI Construction’s subsidiaries, including Océlian (specializing in maritime works), Navarra TS, and Cardem Pyro (focused on soil remediation), will contribute to the project’s successful completion.

This new development reflects VINCI Construction’s longstanding expertise in port infrastructure. In addition to its work on the La Chatière project, VINCI Construction companies have recently upgraded La Cotinière fishing port in south-west France and Brest commercial port in Brittany. The company is also involved in several ongoing projects, including the expansion of the Porto-Vecchio marina in Corsica, the extension of the Port-la-Nouvelle commercial port in south-east France, and the installation of onshore power supplies for cruise ships at Le Havre’s three berths, in partnership with VINCI Energies.

The La Chatière project, supported by funding from the Normandy region, the French government, the European Union (via the Connecting Europe Facility), and HAROPA PORT, will contribute to the decarbonization of transport along the Seine river corridor, while enhancing multimodal connectivity and furthering the region’s economic development.
