(PRESS RELEASE) BONN/BRUSSELS, 19-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — On Green Postal Day 2024, postal companies from across Europe, North America, Oceania, Africa, and Southeast Asia are celebrating more than 15 years of cooperation in reducing their environmental impact. Since 2008, these global postal companies have collectively reduced their annual CO2 emissions by nearly 40%. The goal is to further decrease emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019, with 75% of their energy consumption coming from renewable sources.

DHL Group is at the forefront of this movement, using over 30,000 electric vehicles, which account for 44% of its fleet in Germany. The company plans to increase this percentage to 80-90% by 2030. DHL is also investing in transitional technologies like Bio-CNG trucks, with over 450 trucks planned for deployment in Germany by the end of 2024. Additionally, DHL is experimenting with hydrogen and HVO-powered vehicles to decarbonize long-haul transport.

Postal companies worldwide are prioritizing partnerships in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), sharing experiences to accelerate progress on sustainability goals. This includes sustainable procurement practices, waste reduction, and supporting the circular economy by recycling materials and optimizing transport routes. These efforts are essential in promoting sustainable logistics and consumer behavior.

Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “To meet our customers’ expectations for reduced CO2 emissions, we need uniform sustainability standards and effective regulations. Working together as an industry, we can continue to drive investments and innovation in more sustainable mail and e-commerce transport.”
