Global leader in environmental and industrial measurement Vaisala to mark 40 years of aviation innovations with customers at World Air Traffic Management (ATM) Congress in Madrid

VANTAA, 13-3-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — Vaisala, a global leader in environmental and industrial measurement, will celebrate forty years of aviation innovations with customers at World Air Traffic Management (ATM) Congress in Madrid, Spain this week.  In 1975 Vaisala developed a weather station that collected various weather observations automatically at Helsinki Vantaa Airport, and in 2015, Vaisala has installed over 1900 of these Automated Weather Observing Systems (known as AWOS) around the world.  Today, Vaisala supports aviation with weather observations, severe weather information and winter weather decision making and monitoring tools.

Since that early project in 1975 the aviation world has changed. Weather related delays are now better understood, and advanced planning and coordination can occur because information about the weather has improved.  Weather information has also improved weather models and forecasts, giving aviation authorities more confidence in making decisions to minimize impacts.

Improving Aviation Safety and Efficiency

In the past forty years Vaisala has remained true to its core of quality measurements by offering its AviMet® aviation observation family of products.  Quality measurements are important for reliable airport operations and usage by the meteorological community. Vaisala has also led the way in winter weather tools for airports and aviation. Sensors that monitor runway condition and measure the amount of water in the snowfall help in deicing decisions for runways and on airplane wings. Finally, Vaisala has assisted in mitigating the impact of severe weather (lightning, strong winds, heavy rains) by developing precision and global lightning detection networks and windshear monitoring solutions.

Only Vaisala is a true weather partner in aviation, and not simply an equipment provider to airports. The focus on science and meteorology has meant that Vaisala has led the way in solving many aviation weather challenges. “Vaisala has a long history of scientific discovery in aviation,” comments Nick Demetriades Vaisala Airports Offering Portfolio Manager. “For our customers we know there is no margin for error. Therefore, we need to make sure we are providing the most accurate solution available so airplanes arrive safely and airports operate efficiently.”
