(PRESS RELEASE) BAAR, 28-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Glencore‘s subsidiary Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) is not connected to the incidents and the fatalities of illegal artisanal miners across its industrial mining concessions in the Kolwezi area, Democratic Republic of the Congo. On a daily basis, Glencore’s company in Kolwezi has seen on an average 2,000 illegal artisanal miners present across its industrial mining concessions in the area posing a significant risk to KCC employees, operating equipment and the illegal artisanal miners themselves.
Unfortunately and tragically there are reports of 19 fatalities confirmed with possible further unconfirmed fatalities. Two of the galleries, those illegal artisanal miners were working in on benches overlooking the extraction area, caved in.
While Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) is fully committed to and engaged with the search and rescue operations with the local authorities, those incidents are not linked to its operations or activities.
The company, Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), calls on all illegal miners to cease from putting their lives at risk by trespassing on its industrial site. KCC is doing its best to keep the communities informed of the dangers involved with illegal trespassing on major industrial concessions.
