GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA strengthens its commitment to Houston Museum of Natural Science by again donating Renewable Energy Certificates

HOUSTON, 12-12-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, a leader in U.S. retail energy, is further strengthening the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s commitment to environmental responsibility by again donating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to the nonprofit organization. The gift will offset the museum’s electricity consumption during the month of December.

Each Green-e© certified REC represents the environmental attributes or benefits associated with a specific quantity of energy generated from a renewable source, such as solar or wind. According to www.eia.gov, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources’ donation to the museum over the course of the year was equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 67,346 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, the removal of about 2,626 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, or the displacement of the estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions of 553 passenger vehicles.

“We’re proud to continue supporting the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s pursuit of environmentally responsible operations and to help them offer visitors a green destination during the holiday season,” said Sam Henry, president and CEO of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources. “We value the museum’s work and are pleased to continue our collaboration with this leading eco-friendly institution and landmark venue.”

Joel Bartsch, president and curator of gems and minerals at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, said the donations help reinforce the museum’s commitment to bringing more awareness to the importance of sustainability.

“We house a number of permanent exhibits that promote critical concepts in environmental awareness,” explained Bartsch. “The Rainforest Conservatory of the Cockrell Butterfly Center is a great example. This exhibit gives visitors insight on the importance of sustaining tropical rainforests – an environment that supports the life cycle of a broad range of species, including exotic plants and butterflies.

“The continued support of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources in donating RECs further underscores our efforts to drive home the value of protecting our planet in all aspects of our operations – from our energy strategy to our educational programs and exhibits.”

One of the most heavily attended museum venues in the United States, the Houston Museum of Natural Science houses the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham Giant Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, and space for a wide range of permanent and traveling exhibits. It also maintains two satellite facilities – the George Observatory and the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land.

Green-e© is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market.
