Key Findings of the Report

  • Gasoline engines account for 80% of the automotive fuel injector sales in 2018, upheld by narrowing gap between diesel and petrol prices, and higher carbon footprint of diesel-based engines
  • China, world’s largest automotive market, will lead production, with nearly 40% volume share in 2018
  • Gasoline port fuel injectors remains the top-seller in 2018; global sales are estimated at nearly 330,000 units in 2018, up from over 317,000 units in 2017
  • Implementation of stringent emission norms has given an impetus to automotive fuel injector manufacturers to develop direct injection technology in gasoline engines, without compromising the fuel economy
  • Gasoline direct injector sales will reach nearly 115,000 units in 2018-end, recording a CAGR approximately equal to that of gasoline port fuel injectors

Automotive Fuel Injectors Sales Concentrated in Passenger Cars

Demand for automotive fuel injectors will remain concentrated in the passenger car category. Fact.MR estimates sales in passenger car category to be 4X of commercial vehicles. Passenger cars sales have proliferated in the recent past, with nearly 8% growth in 2018 over 2017 in India alone, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. This further points at prominent demand for automotive fuel injectors in passenger cars, with global sales estimated at over 465,700 in 2018.

Automotive Fuel Injector Sales (Units)
2018 F 2019 F 2020 F 2022 F 2028 F
Passenger Cars 465,727 XX XX XX XX
Commercial Vehicles 102,560 XX XX XX XX

Diesel Direct Injectors – Volume Growth Prospects Subsidiary; Value Remains High

The study foresees moderate volume growth prospects for diesel direct injectors, however revenues from sales of this variant will remain 2X of gasoline port fuel injector and gasoline direct injector in 2018. Higher viscosity and time-constraints linked with injection of diesel fuel post-TDC compression, entails the requirement for high pressure environment over 2000 bar. This further makes the development and production of diesel direct injector comparatively more challenging and expensive.

“OEMs are continuously focusing on engine downsizing to comply with stricter emission regulations. The evolving emission regulations are driving adoption of cylinder deactivation (CDA) technology that features variable displacement and improved fuel economy,” says Mr. Shambhu Nath Jha, Senior Consultant at Fact.MR. “The strategic partnership of Ford with Schaeffler for investigating potential application of CDA technology in its 1 liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engines is an example of the growing prominence of CDA technology. OEM focus on improving spraying accuracy of atomized fuel will drive the adoption of electronic fuel injection (EFI) technology,” concludes Mr. Jha.
