From Seville to Sydney: CAF’s Urbos trams achieve 1,000th rollout in global success story

(IN BRIEF) CAF has celebrated the rollout of its 1,000th Urbos tram, a milestone achievement highlighting its global leadership in sustainable and innovative mobility solutions. Since their debut in 2010 in Seville and later Zaragoza, Urbos trams have expanded to 38 cities in 19 countries, with upcoming deployments in nearly 50 cities including Sydney, Belgrade, Amsterdam, and Lisbon. Manufactured across eight CAF plants in five countries, Urbos trams are recognised for their sustainability—being the first trams in the world to receive an Environmental Product Declaration and incorporating over 20% recycled materials. They also feature pioneering technologies such as onboard energy storage systems, inductive charging, virtual coupling, and autonomous driving. With more than 2.5 million daily users and millions of kilometres travelled, the 1,000th unit underscores CAF’s enduring commitment to innovation, passenger comfort, and climate-friendly urban transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) BEASAIN, 26-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — CAF has rolled out its 1,000th Urbos tram, a landmark achievement that underscores the company’s leadership in sustainable and innovative urban transport. Since its launch in 2006, the Urbos platform has become a global benchmark in reliability, adaptability, and technological advancement, serving millions of passengers across diverse cities worldwide.

The first Urbos trams entered service in 2010 on Seville’s MetroCentro line, followed by Zaragoza in 2011. Today, Urbos vehicles operate in 38 cities across 19 countries, with deployments set to expand to nearly 50 cities in the coming years. Upcoming projects include Belgrade, Sydney, Málaga, Birmingham, Cincinnati, Amsterdam, Oslo, Granada, Nantes, Kaohsiung, Freiburg, Mauritius, Kansas, Budapest, Luxembourg, Canberra, Antwerp, Liège, and Lisbon. Collectively, these trams have covered millions of kilometres – equivalent to circling the globe 15,000 times.

The Urbos platform has been manufactured across eight CAF plants in five countries, including facilities in Spain (Beasain, Zaragoza, Irún, Linares), France (Bagnères-de-Bigorre), the United Kingdom (Newport), the United States (Elmira), and Hungary (Dunakeszi). This international production footprint reflects CAF’s role as a truly global provider of mobility solutions.

Sustainability has been a defining feature of Urbos from the outset. In 2011, it became the first tram in the world to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Today, more than 20% of materials used in its construction come from recycled sources, and the fleet helps prevent millions of tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year by providing clean and efficient transport.

Innovation has also remained central to the Urbos platform. CAF pioneered the use of Onboard Energy Storage Systems (OESS), enabling trams to operate without overhead catenary lines. Today, 25% of delivered Urbos fleets include this technology. The company has also advanced in areas such as inductive energy charging, virtual coupling of tram units, and even autonomous driving, with successful demonstrations of remote-controlled tram operations from kilometres away.

Currently, more than 2.5 million passengers use Urbos trams every day around the world. The platform’s design adapts to the cultural and operational needs of each city, prioritising accessibility, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency. The delivery of the 1,000th tram is a testament to CAF’s sustained investment in innovation, sustainability, and excellence in public transport.
