FlevoBESS to Launch Netherlands’ Largest Battery Storage Facility by 2025

(IN BRIEF) By the end of 2025, FlevoBESS will operate the largest battery storage facility in the Netherlands, with a capacity of 31.6MW/126.4MWh. Located next to the Windplan Groen transformer station in Dronten, the battery will store surplus electricity from local wind farms and help balance supply and demand in the energy market. FlevoBESS is part of the Dronter Energie Opslag project, which includes three batteries to optimize wind energy use. The project is community-backed, with over 400 local shareholders, and will provide enough energy to power about 23,000 households.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 6-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — FlevoBESS is set to launch the largest battery storage facility in the Netherlands by the end of 2025, with a remarkable capacity of 31.6MW/126.4MWh. Construction preparations for the facility are already underway. The battery will be located next to the Windplan Groen transformer station in Dronten, which consolidates electricity from several local wind farms within a closed distribution system. A loan agreement with ASN Bank was finalized in December 2024, and under a long-term contract with Eneco, the energy company will utilize the battery to balance supply and demand for sustainable electricity on the energy market.

This new battery is part of the Dronter Energie Opslag project, which will feature a total of three batteries, each with the same 31.6MW capacity. The batteries will maximize the potential of wind energy generated by the connected farms. Eneco will oversee the operation of FlevoBESS, storing excess electricity for use during periods when generation falls short, thereby increasing the operational hours of the turbines and ensuring more efficient utilization of sustainable energy.

The initiative is a local endeavor, driven by the surrounding wind farms and supported by over 400 local shareholders, including residents from the area. FlevoBESS is a community-backed project aimed at enhancing the use of renewable energy. Once operational, the battery will store enough energy to meet the daily needs of around 23,000 households.
