Femern Exhibition Debuts at LEGOLAND Billund to Showcase Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Construction

(IN BRIEF) On 23 June, a new 250 m² “Femern” exhibition opened in LEGOLAND® Billund’s Miniland, featuring a giant LEGO® model of the 18 km Fehmarnbelt immersed tunnel between Denmark and Germany. Inaugurated by Transport Ministers Thomas Danielsen and Claus Ruhe Madsen, the interactive display—built in collaboration with Sund & Bælt—highlights the tunnel factory, installation vessels, and local scenery, aiming to inspire vocational training in construction. With over 800,000 bricks, operational cranes, and region-spanning landmarks, the exhibit underscores the tunnel’s role in enhancing connectivity and Sund & Bælt’s goal to train 500 apprentices.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 25-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Femern takes centre stage at LEGOLAND® Billund with a new 250 m² exhibition showcasing Denmark’s landmark Fehmarnbelt tunnel project. Inaugurated on 23 June by Danish Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen and Schleswig-Holstein’s Claus Ruhe Madsen, the interactive Miniland display uses over 800,000 LEGO® bricks to animate the world’s longest immersed tunnel—sparking curiosity in construction trades among younger generations.

The exhibit, developed by LEGOLAND in partnership with Sund & Bælt (the state-owned client for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel), features detailed models of the tunnel factory, marine installation vessels, immersed tunnel elements, and bustling construction logistics. It also highlights regional landmarks from Lolland-Falster and northern Germany, underlining the binational significance of the 18 km link for road and rail connections.

“This Fehmarn exhibition is simply impressive,” said Minister Danielsen at the opening. “I hope it inspires children to consider careers in construction.” Minister Madsen added that the LEGO® recreation mirrors the tunnel’s power to unite nations and markets—just as LEGO itself bridges borders and generations.

LEGOLAND CEO Michael Ottesen noted the hands-on nature of the display: “With cranes to operate and scenes to explore, our guests will learn through play about the engineering behind this once-in-a-generation project.”

Sund & Bælt CEO Mikkel Hemmingsen emphasised the collaboration’s workforce impact: “The construction industry needs skilled labour, and this exhibit will spark interest in the builders of tomorrow.” Sund & Bælt has committed to training at least 500 apprentices during the tunnel’s construction.

  • The tunnel will enable trains to travel between Copenhagen and Hamburg in 2.5 hours.
  • Fehmarn Link Contractors (FLC) is the main contractor for the construction of the tunnel factory and tunnel.
