Ericsson and Telstra Introduce Groundbreaking Automated Energy Saver for Smarter, Sustainable 5G Network Management

(IN BRIEF) Ericsson and Telstra have launched the 5G Advanced Automated Energy Saver (AES), a cutting-edge feature for energy-efficient network management, making Telstra the first in the Southern Hemisphere to implement such a solution. AES uses intent-based automation to optimize network performance based on real-time data, reducing energy use without impacting customer experience. This partnership aligns with Telstra’s commitment to sustainability by ensuring efficient 5G operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 29-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Telstra have announced the launch of the 5G Advanced Automated Energy Saver (AES), marking a significant innovation in sustainable 5G network management for the Southern Hemisphere. The AES feature, a first for Telstra’s network, brings an intelligent approach to energy management by automatically adjusting operations based on real-time network traffic, balancing optimal energy savings with seamless customer experiences.

This advanced energy management tool leverages intent-based automation—allowing operators to rely on service-related metrics rather than manually setting network parameters, a challenging task for Communication Service Providers. By automating the ideal balance between energy conservation and network performance, AES is helping Telstra pursue its sustainability goals without sacrificing quality.

At its core, AES optimizes Telstra’s NR Massive MIMO Sleep function, dynamically controlling antenna usage during varying traffic levels. Ericsson’s software solution for 5G Advanced includes AES as part of a broader strategy to create programmable, energy-efficient networks that operate with intelligence and precision. This collaboration with Telstra exemplifies Ericsson’s commitment to sustainable 5G innovation, including future projects like Automated Carrier Aggregation.

Telstra’s Network Engineering Executive, Sri Amirthalingam, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Our partnership with Ericsson on AES is a pivotal step toward advanced, intelligent, and automated networks. By focusing on intent-based solutions, we can enhance performance and sustainability while maintaining exceptional customer experience.”

Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, echoed this sentiment, noting that as demand for 5G services grows, “ensuring sustainability remains a priority. The AES deployment showcases how innovation can drive both network performance and environmental responsibility.” Together, Ericsson and Telstra are setting the stage for the future of sustainable 5G.
