(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 25-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Ericsson, in collaboration with China Mobile and Zhangjiagang Port Group, has successfully implemented a 5G-powered smart network at Zhangjiagang Port in Eastern China, resulting in significant gains in operational efficiency, energy savings, and cost reductions. This 5G-enabled transformation, which began in August 2022, has revolutionized port operations by incorporating automation, digitalization, and intelligent systems.

The enhanced connectivity provided by the 5G network has brought substantial improvements to the port’s bulk terminals, including more efficient handling of dry bulk cargo such as coal, ore, and grain. The 5G network, developed in partnership with Ericsson and China Mobile, uses advanced technologies like AI, remote control, and autonomous systems to boost productivity, improve safety, and reduce environmental impact.

Key innovations include automation of large equipment for loading, unloading, and transportation, as well as remote control of bulk cargo clearing systems, which enhances safety and reduces labor costs. The port has also integrated IoT technology to streamline production scheduling and operations, leading to a 12.8% increase in workforce efficiency and more than 10% annual energy savings, equivalent to RMB 1.2 million. Additionally, the introduction of automated inspection systems has significantly reduced maintenance costs and extended the life of key equipment.

Ericsson and China Mobile are continuing to explore customized 5G solutions for the port, with plans to introduce more advanced applications as the technology evolves. The partnership has paved the way for smarter, more efficient port operations, with further innovations on the horizon to enhance productivity, safety, and environmental sustainability.
