Equinor Powers Platform Supply Vessel with Gasum’s Bio-LNG

Equinor Powers Platform Supply Vessel with Gasum’s Bio-LNG

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has partnered with Equinor to supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) to Equinor’s platform supply vessel, Island Crusader, in the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. The initiative, which began in mid-July, involves regular deliveries of bio-LNG, a renewable fuel with 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels. This collaboration supports Equinor’s goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050. Gasum aims to provide 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide reduction. The bio-LNG can be used interchangeably with LNG, offering flexibility for maritime transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 9-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant move towards sustainability, Gasum has partnered with Equinor to conduct a series of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) bunkering operations in the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. The collaboration involves supplying ISCC-EU certified mass balanced bio-LNG to Equinor’s chartered platform supply vessel, Island Crusader.

The initial bio-LNG delivery occurred successfully in mid-July, with Gasum planning to continue supplying Island Crusader with 2–3 truckloads of bio-LNG, each containing approximately 22 tons, every other week.

Both companies are dedicated to ambitious sustainability goals. Equinor aims to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050, and these bio-LNG deliveries represent a step towards that objective. Bio-LNG, derived from waste feedstocks like biowaste and sewage sludge, boasts life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are about 90% lower than those of fossil fuels.

Island Crusader also utilizes battery hybrid technology to enhance its environmental performance further. Biogas, a renewable fuel, can be used in the same applications as natural gas, including road and maritime transport, and industrial energy.

Gasum is committed to increasing its renewable gas supply to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy. The company aims to offer 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions for its customers.

This collaboration demonstrates the potential of bio-LNG as a viable alternative to traditional fuels, contributing to the circular economy and promoting a cleaner energy future. Gasum offers bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies with vessels running on liquefied natural gas, showcasing the interchangeability and flexibility of LNG and bio-LNG.
