ENTSO-E Celebrates 15 Years of Advancing Europe’s Clean Energy Transition and Grid Integration

(IN BRIEF) ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, is celebrating its 15th anniversary, highlighting its role in creating a clean, reliable, and competitive power system for Europe. Since its establishment in 2009, ENTSO-E has united 40 TSOs across 36 countries, driving grid integration and market efficiency while supporting over 500 million citizens. Key achievements include synchronizing Ukraine and Moldova’s power systems with Continental Europe and preparing for the synchronization of the Baltic States. To mark the milestone, ENTSO-E is hosting a high-level conference in Brussels to address topics like grid security, renewable energy connections, and supply chain resilience. Leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in building a secure, sustainable electricity network to support Europe’s carbon-neutral goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 4-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Today marks a significant milestone for ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, as it celebrates 15 years of collaboration and innovation in creating a clean, reliable, and competitive power system for Europe. Established in 2009, ENTSO-E has unified 40 transmission system operators (TSOs) across 36 countries, leading the integration of electricity markets and ensuring the secure operation of the world’s largest interconnected electrical grid.

A History of Cooperation and Innovation

Rooted in decades of collaboration among European TSOs, ENTSO-E was created to fulfill a legal mandate to serve European citizens by delivering a secure and efficient electricity system. The organization has since played a pivotal role in synchronizing grids, facilitating market integration, and addressing challenges in the evolving energy landscape.

Key milestones include the emergency synchronization of Continental Europe’s power system with Ukraine and Moldova in 2022, enabling electricity exchanges between the two regions. ENTSO-E is now working toward the synchronization of Baltic TSOs with the European grid, a critical project scheduled for completion in February.

Commemorating the Journey

To celebrate its anniversary, ENTSO-E is hosting a high-level conference in Brussels, titled Powering the Sustainable Transition: Grids for a Carbon-Neutral and Competitive Europe. The event brings together over 250 policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to discuss the future of Europe’s energy systems.

“Our dual mission centers on preparing a power system fit for a carbon-neutral Europe while maintaining security and efficiency to ensure the competitiveness of the continent,” said Damian Cortinas, Chair of the ENTSO-E Board.

The conference agenda includes discussions on grid security and resilience, offshore energy integration, supply chain challenges, and the transformative impact of digital technologies. Three panels will focus on critical themes: transmission system resilience, the role of grids in the energy transition, and strategies for building a competitive and reliable European supply chain.

A Vision for Tomorrow

Sonya Twohig, Secretary-General of ENTSO-E, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “Building a secure, reliable, and sustainable electricity network requires collective effort with stakeholders and partners. We remain committed to serving European consumers and addressing the challenges of tomorrow’s energy networks.”

The event reflects ENTSO-E’s unwavering commitment to advancing Europe’s energy goals, ensuring secure and sustainable electricity for over 500 million citizens while paving the way for a carbon-neutral future.
