(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 15-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — At the Quirinal Palace in Rome, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, Eni awarded the 2024 Eni Awards, which have become an internationally recognized standard for excellence in energy and environmental research. The event, now in its 16th year, underscores Eni’s commitment to scientific innovation and sustainability, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Since its inception in 2008, the Eni Award has attracted over 11,000 research applications globally.

The awards spanned several categories, including the Energy Transition section, awarded to Marc Fontecave from the Collège de France for his groundbreaking work in converting CO2 into high-value compounds using renewable energy. Nam-Gyu Park of Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea received the Energy Frontiers award for advancing solid-state perovskite solar cells, a key innovation surpassing silicon in photovoltaic technology. In the Advanced Environmental Solutions category, Holger Braunschweig from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg was recognized for his innovative approach to nitrogen conversion, reducing environmental impact by avoiding toxic metals.

Eni also honored young researchers, with awards going to Elvira Spatolisano from Politecnico di Milano and Stefano Toso from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore for their contributions to sustainable hydrogen processes and advanced semiconductor technologies, respectively. Additionally, four promising talents from Africa were recognized for their research in areas ranging from renewable energy to water treatment.

The “Eni Joule for Entrepreneurship” special mention was awarded to three startups—HBI, SLY, and RarEarth—for their innovative solutions in areas like sewage sludge treatment, AI-based forest fire detection, and rare earth recycling from electric motors.
