Eni continues its support for fusion, solar, carbon capture research in collaboration with MIT

The collaboration between MIT and Eni on low-carbon energy research and technologies renewed

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 18-Oct-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Eni’s tenure as a Founding Member of the MITEI has just been extended through 2023. It is a joint collaboration of Eni and MIT in the field of low-carbon energy research. In addition, Eni is also joining MITEI’s newest Low-Carbon Energy Center, which is the Mobility Systems Center. Furthermore, Eni will also be part of the MIT Quest for Intelligence, which focuses on advance research in human and machine intelligence and delivering transformative new technology for the society.

Eni will deepen its longstanding interest in supporting artificial intelligence research through its work with MIT Quest improving further worker safety and reducing carbon emissions through carbon capture and other technologies.

The partnership between MIT and Eni is since 2008 and has resulted so far in a number of successful research projects and 30 patent filings for low-carbon technologies and innovations. Current works are in the field of nanotechnologies and materials for lightweight, flexible solar photovoltaics that have great potential to provide low-carbon energy.

Since last year, a major focus of the collaboration is to advance magnetic fusion energy technology. Being a emissions-free, safe, and scalable technology, fusion energy represents a promising opportunity to play a major role in decarbonizing global energy systems.

By renewing its MITEI membership Eni will continue to support magnetic fusion energy research through MIT’s Laboratory for Innovation in Fusion Technologies. Furthermore, the company will continue its membership in MITEI’s Low-Carbon Energy Centers for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage; Energy Storage; and Solar Energy.

Commenting on the collaboration, MITEI Director Robert C. Armstrong, said:
