Eni and SONATRACH Expand Methane Monitoring and CO₂ Removal Collaboration

(IN BRIEF) Eni and SONATRACH have signed a new Memorandum of Intent to expand cooperation on reducing emissions and advancing decarbonisation initiatives in Algeria’s oil and gas sector. The agreement builds on a three-year cooperation framework launched in January 2023, which focused on reducing gas flaring, valorising recovered gas and mitigating emissions from upstream activities. The expanded cooperation will include natural CO₂ removal through forestry projects, stronger monitoring and reduction of methane emissions, and the adoption of relevant international oil and gas standards. Under the previous agreement, the companies carried out technical analyses, capacity-building work and field visits, identifying initiatives in fugitive and venting emissions reduction, energy efficiency, renewable energy, flaring reduction and carbon capture, utilisation and storage. A joint Leak Detection and Repair campaign covered 800 kilometres of pipelines and around 7,500 monitored points, while baseline emissions were assessed across six upstream assets operated by Eni and SONATRACH in Algeria.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 17-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Eni and SONATRACH have signed a new Memorandum of Intent to expand cooperation on decarbonisation initiatives for the oil and gas sector and the reduction of emissions in Algeria.

The agreement is aimed at promoting concrete initiatives to reduce emissions while supporting the adoption of international best practices.

The new Memorandum of Intent builds on the cooperation pathway launched in January 2023, when the two companies signed a three-year agreement focused on reducing gas flaring, valorising recovered gas and mitigating emissions associated with upstream activities in Algeria.

With the latest agreement, Eni and SONATRACH are broadening the scope of their cooperation and introducing additional areas of collaboration.

The companies will work together on natural CO₂ removal initiatives through forestry projects.

They will also strengthen activities for monitoring, quantifying and reducing methane emissions through the adoption of relevant international oil and gas standards.

Under the 2023 agreement, Eni and SONATRACH developed a structured programme of joint activities covering technical analyses, capacity-building initiatives and field visits.

These activities were designed to identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas and methane emissions while training technicians to perform measurements directly on site.

The work carried out under the earlier framework helped identify initiatives across several areas.

These include the reduction of fugitive and venting emissions, improvements in energy efficiency, the development of renewable energy projects, reduced flaring, and assessment of opportunities for carbon capture, utilisation and storage.

As part of the cooperation, the two companies jointly carried out a Leak Detection and Repair campaign across 800 kilometres of pipelines.

The campaign monitored around 7,500 points and contributed to a reduction in fugitive emissions.

Eni said LDAR measurement campaigns are now conducted independently and on a routine basis across all joint ventures operated jointly by Eni and SONATRACH.

The companies also completed baseline emissions evaluations across six upstream assets operated by Eni and SONATRACH in Algeria.

Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981.

In 2025, the company reported net production in the country of approximately 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Eni said it continues to cooperate with SONATRACH to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Algeria and confirms its position as a leading international energy company in the country.

Through the new Memorandum of Intent, Eni and SONATRACH are reinforcing their collaboration on practical emissions-reduction measures, methane monitoring, natural CO₂ removal, and wider decarbonisation opportunities across Algeria’s oil and gas sector.
