ENGIE Unveils Massive Battery Energy Storage System to Enhance Renewable Energy Integration

(IN BRIEF) ENGIE, a global leader in renewable energy, has introduced a groundbreaking Co-Located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a storage capacity of 638 MWh and 139 MW of installed capacity. This innovative technology, utilizing lithium batteries, is integrated with the Coya PV solar plant (180 MWac) in the Antofagasta Region. With 232 modules, BESS Coya can store five hours’ worth of electricity generated by the solar plant and inject it into the grid during peak periods, contributing approximately 200 GWh per year and providing green energy to about 100,000 homes, thus mitigating around 65,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Paulo Almirante, ENGIE Senior Executive Vice President Renewables & Energy Management, emphasized that this project aligns with ENGIE’s ambition to accelerate battery storage development, aiming for 10 GW of installed capacity by 2030, and underscores the pivotal role of flexibility solutions like BESS in integrating renewables and advancing the energy transition while ensuring energy system efficiency, reliability, and security. As of December 31, 2023, ENGIE already operated 1.3 GW of battery capacity globally and had 3.6 GW secured under development.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÈFENSE, 19-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — This system has a storage capacity of 638 MWh, with 139 MW of installed capacity. This co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology uses lithium batteries to store the renewable energy generated by the Coya PV solar plant (180 MWac) based in the Antofagasta Region.

Through its 232 modules, BESS Coya’s installed capacity will enable to store the equivalent of five hours of electricity and inject it into the grid during peak periods, representing the delivery of 200 GWh on average per year. It will also play an important environmental role by supplying enough green energy for around 100,000 homes, thereby avoiding the emission of 65,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
