Energy Industry Embraces AI, But Digital Divide Grows Among Companies, DNV Survey Reveals

(IN BRIEF) A DNV survey reveals that nearly half of senior energy professionals plan to integrate AI-driven applications into their operations within the next year. The survey also highlights a growing divide between “Digital Leaders,” who are excelling in digitalization and adopting advanced technologies like AI, and “Digital Laggards,” who are struggling with early stages of adoption. AI is expected to significantly reduce energy costs by 2050, but challenges such as integrating legacy systems and resistance to change remain. Organizations that prioritize digitalization are likely to maintain a competitive edge.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 27-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — A recent survey conducted by DNV, a global expert in energy systems, reveals that nearly half of senior energy professionals plan to integrate AI-driven applications into their operations within the next year. The findings, detailed in DNV’s report “Leading a Data-Driven Transition,” underscore the crucial role of digitalization in the ongoing transformation of the energy sector.

The report highlights a growing divide between “Digital Leaders” and “Digital Laggards.” While 28% of companies are excelling in digitalization, showing optimism in achieving their revenue and decarbonization goals, 37% are lagging behind, struggling with early stages of technology adoption. Digital Leaders are significantly ahead in utilizing AI and other advanced technologies, with 69% planning to use AI-driven applications in the coming year, compared to much lower percentages among Laggards.

AI and advanced data analytics are seen as pivotal for the future of energy, with estimates suggesting that AI could help reduce clean energy generation costs by $1.3 trillion by 2050. However, challenges remain, particularly in integrating legacy systems and overcoming resistance to change.

Lucy Craig, Director of Growth, Innovation, and Digitalization at DNV, emphasizes that organizations leading in digitalization are poised to maintain their competitive edge by continuing to invest in digital technologies and fostering a culture of innovation.
