Enemalta Partners with Siemens to Revolutionize Malta’s Grid with Predictive Energy Management

(IN BRIEF) Enemalta, Malta’s leading energy provider, is partnering with Siemens to enhance its grid infrastructure using the Gridscale X software platform. This innovative system will enable predictive management, reduce outages, and optimize grid operations for over 450,000 residents. The collaboration addresses challenges from recent extreme weather events and aims to modernize Malta’s energy network by leveraging smart meter data and advanced analytics. The pilot phase begins in November 2024, with a full rollout planned over three years, marking a significant step in Malta’s digital energy transformation.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZUG, 16-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Enemalta, Malta’s primary energy services provider, is set to undergo a significant digital transformation of its grid infrastructure through a collaboration with Siemens. The partnership will see the implementation of Siemens’ advanced Gridscale X software platform, which aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce outage times, and optimize grid management for over 450,000 residents in Malta. This initiative marks a shift from traditional reactive maintenance to predictive, data-driven management.

Malta’s electricity grid has faced significant challenges, particularly during the heatwave of 2023, which caused record-high temperatures, surging energy demand for cooling systems, and widespread power outages. While Enemalta restored power after intense repair efforts, the company recognized the need for a robust digital solution to address grid congestion and improve overall reliability.

Siemens’ Gridscale X platform, part of the Siemens Xcelerator suite, is designed to bring transparency and actionable insights to the low-voltage network. Leveraging data from second-generation smart meters, the system detects outages, visualizes grid congestion, and supports proactive management through advanced analytics. The platform also lays the foundation for future innovations such as flexibility management.

“Grid congestion poses a significant challenge to the energy transition,” said Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software. “Our collaboration with Enemalta will address critical operational challenges, enabling a move toward predictive management and greater grid reliability. Together, we are setting new standards for digital transformation in the energy sector.”

Ryan Fava, Executive Chairman of Enemalta, echoed these sentiments: “With Siemens’ cutting-edge technology, we are modernizing Malta’s grid to improve service reliability and unlock the potential of smart meter data. This partnership enables us to enhance the digital capabilities of our network and prepare for future advancements in energy management.”

The pilot phase of the Gridscale X implementation is slated to begin in November 2024, with a comprehensive rollout planned over the subsequent three years. The project represents a key step toward modernizing Malta’s energy infrastructure, improving service resilience, and driving the island’s energy sector into a more sustainable, digital future.
