Eneco and Charged Partner to Trial Home Battery Integration for Grid Stability and Consumer Benefits

(IN BRIEF) Eneco and Charged have announced a collaborative initiative, ‘Gridease,’ aimed at leveraging home battery systems to enhance grid stability while offering financial rewards to consumers. The trial targets customers with Sessy home batteries and both fixed and variable contracts with Eneco, enabling them to share battery data and partial control with the energy provider. This capability allows Eneco to optimize battery usage during peak times, alleviating strain on the electricity grid. Participants in the trial will receive a monthly compensation of 5 euros for data sharing and additional variable compensation for Eneco’s partial battery control. The initiative not only supports grid reliability but also incentivizes sustainable energy practices among consumers, aligning with broader efforts towards a more efficient energy system.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 9-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The increasing trend of installing home batteries for solar energy storage is not only benefiting individual energy consumption but also offers potential solutions for power grid management. Eneco and Charged have initiated a trial to explore the use of stored power in home batteries, aiming to ease the stress on the power grid. This initiative is set to benefit both the stability of the grid and provide financial incentives for customers with fixed or variable contracts.

The innovative service, ‘Gridease,’ enables customers with Sessy home batteries and contracts with Eneco to share their battery data and partial control with the company. This data sharing offers insights into charging and discharging patterns, allowing Eneco to manage energy distribution more efficiently during peak times. Participants in the trial will receive a financial compensation of 5 euros per month for data sharing and additional variable compensation for the partial control of their batteries. Customers will retain the primary benefits of home battery usage, including optimal self-consumption of their generated electricity.

Previously, only consumers with dynamic electricity contracts could use their batteries to alleviate grid stress. This trial extends the possibility to those with fixed or variable contracts, allowing them to claim VAT refunds on the battery purchase price, thus making the investment in home batteries more appealing.

Eneco and Charged’s trial is a significant step towards a sustainable and efficient energy system. By offering financial incentives, they encourage customers to contribute to grid stability and optimize their power usage, thereby supporting the broader energy transition.

VAT refund
Until now, only consumers with a dynamic electricity contract could use the battery to relieve the stress on the power grid. This trial will also allow consumers with a fixed or variable contract to do so. This also makes it possible for them to claim a VAT refund on the purchase price of the battery. It will make the investment in a battery more financially interesting.

A more efficient energy system
The trial means that Eneco and Charged can advance quickly to a more sustainable and efficient energy system. We can make a significant difference to the energy transition by using financial incentives to encourage customers to contribute to a stable grid and to use their own power as efficiently as possible.
