EnBW’s Largest Offshore Project Nears Operation After Completion of Turbine Installation

(IN BRIEF) EnBW has completed the installation of all 64 wind turbines at the He Dreiht offshore wind farm, Germany’s largest offshore wind project. The turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, were installed by Vestas, with further technical and electrical commissioning work scheduled before full operation is expected in late summer. Located around 85 km northwest of Borkum and 110 km west of Heligoland, He Dreiht will have a total output of 960 MW and is expected to supply enough electricity for around 1.1 million households. The project represents an investment of approximately EUR 2.4 billion and is being developed without state funding, with long-term power purchase agreements already covering most future electricity generation.

The turbines, each with an output of 15 megawatts, were installed by manufacturer Vestas.

Further technical and electrical commissioning work will continue over the coming weeks, with the offshore wind farm expected to be fully operational by late summer.

Vestas is currently investigating damage to a rotor blade that occurred in late July.

He Dreiht is Germany’s largest offshore wind farm and continues to take shape as commissioning progresses.

The project is being built around 85 kilometres northwest of Borkum and 110 kilometres west of Heligoland.

With a total planned output of 960 megawatts, the wind farm will be capable of generating enough electricity to meet the needs of around 1.1 million households.

Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW, said the completion of turbine installation marks another important milestone for He Dreiht.

He said offshore wind is a domestic renewable energy source capable of producing significant volumes of electricity for many hours each year.

Heydecker added that offshore wind plays an important role in maintaining security of supply and decarbonising the electricity system.

He said He Dreiht, EnBW’s largest offshore project to date, reflects the company’s continued commitment to expanding renewable energy and moving its generation portfolio toward climate neutrality.

The project is being coordinated from EnBW’s offshore office in Hamburg.

Total investment in He Dreiht amounts to around EUR 2.4 billion.

The majority of the electricity expected to be generated by the wind farm has already been secured through long-term power purchase agreements.

EnBW is also in discussions with further potential buyers for the remaining electricity volumes.

A partner consortium consisting of Allianz Global Investors, AIP Management and Norges Bank Investment Management holds 49.9 percent of the shares in He Dreiht.

The completion of turbine installation moves the project closer to full commissioning and strengthens EnBW’s offshore wind portfolio as Germany continues to expand renewable energy capacity.
