EIF Backs Quantonation II with €30 Million to Fuel European Quantum and Deep-Physics Startups

(IN BRIEF) The EIF has invested €30 million in Quantonation II, a France-based VC fund focused on quantum technologies and deep physics, to address early-stage financing shortages and strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty. Quantonation II plans to build a global portfolio of around 25 startups and five venture studios, spanning applications such as quantum computing, sensing, and secure communications. The fund targets €200 million total assets under management and offers deep-tech companies not only capital but also specialized quantum expertise. This transaction forms part of the EIF’s InvestEU strategy to mitigate equity gaps in underserved innovation sectors.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 24-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Quantonation II, a French early-stage venture capital fund dedicated to quantum technology and deep-physics innovation, has secured a €30 million investment from the European Investment Fund (EIF) under the InvestEU programme. This injection of capital is designed to bridge the equity gap in nascent deep-tech financing, bolstering Europe’s capacity to cultivate homegrown quantum expertise and advance technological sovereignty.

Despite significant breakthroughs in quantum research, the sector still lacks standardized benchmarks and a clear hub of global excellence. Quantonation II aims to assemble a diversified portfolio of approximately 25 high-potential startups and five venture studios worldwide, empowering ventures that translate quantum mechanics and particle-physics concepts into practical applications—ranging from quantum computing and secure communications to ultra-precise sensing and advanced materials research.

“Supporting Quantonation II enables us to back Europe’s most promising quantum innovators,” said Marjut Falkstedt, Chief Executive of the EIF. “This investment underscores our dedication to reinforcing European technological independence and nurturing deep-tech sectors that demand highly specialized know-how.”

Olivier Tonneau, Partner at Quantonation, added, “We’re thrilled to have the EIF’s confidence as we embark on this mission. Their €30 million commitment not only validates our strategy but also accelerates our goal of turning European scientific prowess into industry-leading enterprises.”

With a target size of €200 million, Quantonation II leverages its unique team of quantum specialists to provide portfolio companies with both funding and domain-specific guidance. The EIF’s participation follows its broader InvestEU mandate to close early-stage equity gaps in strategic, high-impact sectors.
