EIB loan to Pamplona for public amenities

5-12-2012 — /europawire.eu/ — The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted a EUR 16 million loan to the Municipality of Pamplona for investment in the city’s urban infrastructure. This is the first instalment of a total loan of EUR 50 million.

The loan is designed to finance schemes under Pamplona’s 2012-2015 investment programme, which aims at modernising the city’s infrastructure with the emphasis on the energy efficiency and accessibility of buildings and public transport.

The planned schemes will be carried out throughout the city and comprise: urban development and creation of parks; urban conservation and renewal, including the upgrading of networks, extension of underground tunnels to house municipal services and renewal of lighting; refurbishment and adaptation of public service buildings (social, educational, cultural, administrative and sports); conservation and upgrading of Pamplona’s cultural heritage, especially the restoration and modernisation of the fortified citadel; sustainable mobility, including the construction of pedestrianised streets and installation of lifts to connect neighbourhoods at different heights.

Pamplona’s investment programme will contribute to the implementation of the “Covenant of Mayors” promoted by the European Commission, which the city has joined. The signatory municipalities have undertaken to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by more than the EU target of 20% by 2020.
