(IN BRIEF) The EIB Group has invested €714 million in two securitisation transactions with BBVA, enabling the bank to mobilise around €1.3 billion to support Spanish SMEs, entrepreneurs and sustainable housing projects. One transaction focuses on boosting business liquidity and investment, particularly in cohesion regions, while the other supports green mortgages for near-zero emission residential buildings. The operation strengthens EU capital markets, encourages private investor participation and aligns with the EIB Group’s priorities on climate action, competitiveness and sustainable housing.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 15-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The EIB Group, comprising the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund, has completed a €714 million investment through two securitisation transactions with BBVA, aimed at expanding access to finance for Spanish businesses and accelerating sustainable housing development. The operation is expected to enable BBVA to mobilise around €1.3 billion in new financing for small and medium-sized enterprises, mid-caps, entrepreneurs and green residential construction projects across Spain.

The first transaction centres on the securitisation of a consumer loan portfolio, designed to unlock approximately €1.1 billion in financing to support companies’ liquidity needs and investment plans. The funding is expected to benefit businesses operating primarily in cohesion regions, where income levels are below the EU average, while also supporting entrepreneurs launching new ventures or scaling early-stage projects. By improving access to long-term financing, the transaction aims to strengthen competitiveness and foster growth among Spain’s business community.

The second operation involves a synthetic securitisation of a mortgage loan portfolio, enabling BBVA to generate a portfolio of roughly €230 million in fully green mortgages. These loans will support individuals and property developers investing in energy efficiency upgrades and the construction of near-zero emission residential buildings. The initiative is intended to facilitate climate-related investments and promote more sustainable housing solutions in line with European decarbonisation objectives.

Through these transactions, the EIB Group is reinforcing its role in advancing innovative financial instruments that help mobilise private capital, reduce risk exposure for financial institutions and deepen EU capital markets. The structure of the securitisations combines public and private risk-sharing, encouraging broader investor participation while supporting priorities such as climate action, economic cohesion and sustainable housing across the European Union.

Overall, the collaboration with BBVA reflects the EIB Group’s commitment to using securitisation as a tool to channel financing toward strategic areas, including business competitiveness, energy efficiency and the development of near-zero emission housing, while contributing to the strengthening of the EU’s savings and investment union.
